No to terrorism
By Khaled Al-Maeena Editor in Chief |
| |
SELDOM has the end of one era and the beginning of another been marked so clearly as the one which ended on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. In retrospect if we compare what was before, the world of Sept. 10, 2001 seems to belong to some incredible time of calm and peace. On that day which changed the world, my wife and I were in America and we saw it all live on TV. The second plane hitting the tower, people fleeing in panic from what they did not understand, people in desperation throwing themselves from the doomed buildings and the Twin Towers themselves collapsing: There is no way anyone who saw those things can ever forget them. The images are now an inescapable and terrible part of our history. The evil acts which produced those horrifying images are also now a part of history. Those acts must not be forgotten. They must be seen as a tragic signal to a world forced into confronting what it had previously managed to avoid. The signal tells us several things; the first is that the world, like it or not, must unite against terrorism. With one voice, the world must say “No to terrorism” and it must do what is necessary to guarantee there is no repetition of those hideous images. Another message from the signal is that there is no grievance, no injustice and no oppression which can justify the murder of so many innocent people. No religion condones such meaningless slaughter and no individual worthy of being called “humane” can possibly agree to so barbarous a method of attracting attention. We see a total absence of religious feeling or morality in the acts. The fact that those responsible for the attacks were allegedly our fellow Muslims and perhaps even our fellow Saudis should make us stop and ponder. We must ask ourselves for reasons. Who were these people? Why did they do what they did? What led them down that path? The first two questions are probably the easiest; it is the third which may take us into regions we do not want to visit and force us to ask unpopular questions which may give rise to even more unpopular answers. But this must be done — coolly, calmly and as unemotionally as possible. We must investigate and if, in the course of our investigation, we stumble upon things that are unpleasant or unpalatable, we must confront them as honestly and sincerely as we can and then act according to the principles and directions of our great religion, Islam. One of the most important things we — and the rest of the world — can do is to educate our children very carefully. And I do not mean provide them with an education which produces narrow minds and self-satisfied individuals who feel themselves superior to every human being who is in the slightest way different. Our children and the children of the rest of the world must be taught to respect other religions, cultures and traditions and out of respect will come in time understanding and acceptance. There is no question of our losing our unique qualities and customs; there is no danger of that and that is not the purpose of education and could never be our aim. Education must seek to inform, to explain and to illuminate; its purpose is to broaden horizons, not constrict them. Education must make our children citizens of the world and not simply citizens of one particular place with no interest in, or knowledge of, the world beyond that place’s borders. At the same time, those from outside the region, those who are neither Arab nor Muslim, must not generalize and smear all Muslims with a guilt which is not theirs. That the guilty called themselves Muslim does not mean that every Muslim shares that guilt; neither does it mean that because they called themselves Muslim, they were. Terrorism belongs to no religion, no creed, no sect, no ethnic group or culture. The most cursory glance at history will bear this out. On this day which is a very sad one, we must think and reflect. We should t |

Reader, “No To Terrorism” is the most thoughtful and well-written article that I have seen on this sad day. In your article you wrote about looking inside and reflecting on this day as to why this happened and how we can prevent it from happening again. I need to add that Americans need to start looking at their lives and the way we live in this world and how it affects others in the world. We take a lot from other countries such as natural resources and we do not give back. We never look at our quality of lives as compared to others in the world. We live a lot better than most except for Europe and Japan, while others in far off lands pay for this. There needs to be more economic equality in this world. Poverty and economic unrest breed extremism. Look at what state Germany was in when Hitler came to power. I really do not have the answers on how this can come about but there are a lot of good points in your article that could be a good start. One of the most important being education and how we raise our children. All children in the world need to be taught that we are all one and everything we do affects someone else. American children and adults need to be learn that life is what is important, not consumerism and economic status. |

Gary Greenberg, Houston, TX, I am amazed that Saudi society actually has sensible people like the author of this article. Please let's see some more. Several items come to my mind when I read this author:
Where is the vicious anti-Semitism that is usually contained in Arab News? Where is the U.S. Christian/Zionist conspiracy theory garbage that I consistently see from Arab News writers? Why all of a sudden do I see a Saudi taking some responsibility for the hate that emulates from your great Kingdom? Why all of a sudden do I read that the Mossad and Jews did not commit the 9/11 atrocities, but it was in fact 15 Saudi citizens that did it?
Of course I am sure that most Saudis do consider themselves superior to the infidel Westerners and of course still believe that the Jews should be exterminated or converted and there homeland turned into an Islamic Republic, but it nice to see that maybe there is a sliver of hope for the Kingdom to come out of its denial and realize that there is a world out there that does not revolve around Mecca.

Masror Hausen Islamabad, Only tolerance will banish terrorism
When I read Khaled Al-Maeena article I said to myself here's a piece I would not miss for the world, albeit post-9/11. Verily the horrendous crime committed on the people of America ushered in a new epoch and what a cruel way of doing that. Were there more sane voices like Mr. Khaled Al-Maeena in the Muslim world, the events of 9/11 could have been averted. Still we need people like him to bridge the difference, to embalm the wounded hearts and stop things getting out of hand. I wish the advocates of tolerance are not stifled. I was in Washington recently and the way I was treated by the US officials and common Americans was nothing less than humiliating. But every time a scorn was heaped on me, my sense of guilt grew. My thoughts went for the families that lost their dear ones. And I prayed for them. I remembered if Allah says He is rehmat alil alameen not rehmat alil muslimeen, why should we treat His makhlooq with discrimination. The only way Mr. Maeena's desire to banish terrorism from the face of the earth will be fulfilled is when the Third Question is answered: "What led them this path?" But the war drums can be heard over Iraq where all the US guns are trained and any moment the lids will be off to drown the voices of peace, love and tolerance seeking unpopular answers to unanswered questions. I believe that we need to enlighten our children about a tolerant society which is intolerant to all intolerant actions. The principle of tolerance is the only one all would have to agree upon ‹ or to suffer repeats of 9/11. This requires intolerance toward all attempts at domination, totalitarian regimes, dictatorships, uniform territorial legislation, states, unions, armies and public services, as organized today. It means tolerance not only for actions within one's private sphere, as for some business and work activities, for artistic and creative activities, for fashions, sexual mores, food, drug and drink intakes, for tools, methods, organizational preferences, hobbies and sports activities, religious cults ‹ all these may be considered as already or almost achieved, or as relatively unimportant but, moreover, for any action which can be practiced tolerantly. Live according to your own system, plan, errors, beliefs, philosophy, religion, reasoning, your own organization, methods, tools, media, banking, credit, finance and insurance system, experts, protection agencies, utilities, laws rules and regulations, all for yourself and your followers but do not force them on anyone else. Toward others use only your example, combined with persuasion and the invitation to join you. Organize with like-minded people in your municipality, your state or continent, or the world, as you please, but leave all dissenters alone, as long as they do only their own thing. |

Reader, I Would believe this if I Knew that this printing was also printed in the local papers there ( Saudi Arabia) In the languages of the region. But My feeling is that your paper will only print this to the American web site and the local population there will never see this news article.... You are right..... I do not trust you because of the events & history of your lifestyles. `I Believe in GOD, And am not happy with the moral decay here ( U.S.A.) but According to my Bible.... All these things must happen when the world is at the " "End Time"...... So.... All I do is Pray & try to live a good life & enjoy the blessings that GOD has Given This Great Nation. |

Paula, Lovely article on Sept 11, 2002. I live a few miles north of Boston, Massachusetts and also have close Muslim friends who were born and raised here. In fact, Massuma's family arrived here nearly one hundred years ago, from what would eventually become Bangladesh and her family made it to the US one year before mine came here from Europe.
My personal belief is that al-Qaeda is not so much going after the US as it is going after control of Saudi Arabia. What better way to cause vulnerability than to drive a wedge between two of the most important countries in the world? One represents the West and the other Islam. If Westerners and Muslims can be tricked into believing that their most revered places are in imminent danger, it would be easy to promote the "clash of civilizations" that the fundamentalist Christian, Zionist Jew and militant Islamist have long desired. Even if ten percent of our respective populations fell into these camps (which I doubt) that is at most 30 million people who are driving the fate of 6.3 billion.
I wish only to say that our best hope is to differentiate between holding to a moral code and imposing it on others. This is what militant Muslims wish to do to non-Muslims. This is also what fundamentalist Christians wish to do to non-Christians. (It always astounds me when fundamentalist Christians stray so far from one of the most fundamentalist principles of the Bible: "Love thy neighbor". The Bible further warns, "Judge not and ye shall not be judged, condemn not and ye shall not be condemned, forgive and ye shall be forgiven." and "All they that take the sword shall perish with the sword." These are the most basic principles taught to the smallest of Christian children yet they seem to escape the grasp of many right-wing Christian leaders and scholars.)
Exposing religious fanaticism for what it is, the manipulation of valid ideologies for perverse political aims, will go a long way toward undermining its credibility in the mainstream. As for those who are more easily persuaded, they will always exist but the moderates of the world (and I believe we are a vast majority) will have to work harder to persuade them to remain on the path of reason.

Reader, I just wanted to say that I thought your article "Tragedy Revisited" was right on the money. I do not consider those hijackers Muslims, or Saudis. As you so elegantly said they have no creed, nor do people with that narrow mindedness and evil intentions have any place in this world. I hope that your voice of reason is heard throughout the middle east and that America and Saudi Arabia continue to build on a strong friendship. It saddens me to think of all the children that are being taught hate, because of a few who do not have goodness in their heart. But we must go on and continue to fight for good and help each other through these hard time.
God Bless You

Najid Hussain, Nice article and very sharp and acceptable message. Especially about much needed reforms in the Islamic outlook.
However, I think the author must ponder a little on John Pilger's observations in Mirror (reproduced below from Fawzia's article). A message to Americans coming from Arabs will have some meaning and significance. International Muslim militancy did not exist prior to 80's. Let us ask the world why. There is an answer to Khaled Al-maeena's third question.

Reader, What a wonderful article. Living in America I’ve started to think all Arab people and nations truly hate us. Wondering often what our people have done to cause this. It’s nice to now that there are people who truly condone the acts of September 11th and feel the deep pain and sorrow our nation does because of it.
Thank You.

Tom Curtis, I have been getting more and more angry at Muslims in general. Even getting to the point where I could group them all in my mind as approving of terrorism and not caring that deep down I knew it could not be.
It was good to read the article above. The author, Khaled Al-Maeena, thinks and is a good man. And, I think he is trying his best to change many long established beliefs in the Arab world. I applaud him. I hope we have time and do not fall into the abyss.
The US is awful tired of seeing sights like Muslims in the streets chanting, "DEATH TO AMERICA".

Charles Rann, Being a regular reader of your paper (and occasional e-mailer), I was very touched by Mr. Al-Maeena's editorial "No To Terrorism". It is an editorial I am printing for distribution to my co-workers and family. I'd send it with my kids to school, but they are 4 and 6.
Though I lost no family in last years tragedy, one family friend and a number of my work acquaintances were killed (I am a securities trader). I would be untruthful if I didn't say I am still bitter.
Yet I recognize fully well that "terrorism belongs to no religion, no creed, no sect, no ethnic group or culture". We have produced our fair share of terrorists in the U.S., and it is intolerable.
Tomorrow is a day for remembrance and healing. I, like most Americans and much of the world, will watch various coverage of the anniversary. I'm sure it will be a day of many tears.
Tomorrow I will think of Mr. Al-Maeena's editorial. I will recommit myself to "educate our (my) children very carefully", and I will pray that a world of peace can become a reality in my children's lifetime.
Islam truly is one of the worlds "great religions", and deserves to be respected as much as any other religion practiced on the face of our globe.
May peace be upon you tomorrow, and may God have mercy on us all.
Kindest Regards |

Nehad Ismail, A fair and balanced article full of common snese and I hope that all the Muslim Opinion Formers/Mosque Imams and all those engaged in the killing of innocent people in Iraq, Russia, Jakarta and Spain will pay attention and listen to the sound of reason as outlined in this admirable article.
Terrorism has no place in the modern world, but fanatics will continue to use violence against innocent victims to promote their agenda of hate. A small minority of misguided fanatics use Islam as a cover or sometimes use the Israeli/Palestinian dispute as a pretext. The Palestinian Issue must be resolved by peaceful means and the implementation of INTERNATIONAL Legality AS INCORPORATED IN UN Resolutions, 242, 338 and 194 . If the USA is to be taken seriously it must insist that UN Resolutions must be respected and implemented. Terrorism and the killing of innocent people is not the way forward.
Nehad Ismail, London, UK |

Brian Funt, Unfortunately, ypu can not pick and choose which resolutions should be followed. The 1967 resolution on Israel declared that land, (deliberately written to not include all land) be returned once Israel is living in peace. Lets remember that Israel was attacked by Jordan, Syria and Egypt. Was this attack respecting the UN resolution that created the State of Israel? Obviously not. Further, do you really believe that there should be no consequence for starting and Losing a war? If you want to site UN resolutions, lets remember who has been attacking who since Israel was created. And, lets also rememeber that Jordan and Syria have eached killed more Palestinians than Israel has.
And if these countries are so concerned about their Palestinian brothers (which I personally feel terrible for those that are living in squalor), open your borders and let them in, or make Arafat open his secret bank accounts a build a couple of hospitals and schools. |

Otis G. Barlow, Sir:
For me, it is very irritating to read people use the root word “terror” and its extensions to make their point, to gain favor and underscore the credibility of their humanity. The author here places a value on the education of our children. Let us ponder what this educational system would be structured around to teach these children so they will become better citizens of the world.
What should we teach them about the carnage in Palestine? Should Vietnam get a mention? Japan? World war I and II? What about the Colonialist Manifesto? Or maybe just teach them about America the beautiful? The great American young men that train to kill and maim from behind the controls of aircraft and long-range artillery? These wonderful Americans that enslaved the African? And hung them if the got out of line? By the way without the benefit of the guarantees that America was founded? Great curriculum without reference to Arab culture and contributions to our civilization! Yes?
Children also learn outside of formal educational settings and respond to the hands-on stimulation of daily life. At what age are we most impressionable? Is it possible to teach tolerance when subjected to personal and direct injustice?
September 11, 2001, because it was live and in living color, will remain with us for eternity. Will probably become a full length movie? It could have changed the world and made it a better place for our children? It didn’t! Americans could have embraced the goodwill and expressions of sorrow from all over the known Universe? Bush Inc. squandered and exploited it!
Men will violate the laws of God and man, but the rule of law is constant! The flow of civilization alternates and tends to function best when it’s survival is threatened (The United Nations, Crimes Against Humanity Tribunal, Non-Nuclear Treaties, et al).
Americans have not been so overtly bigoted in their opinions of other cultures since “Jim Crow”. Bush Inc. (Putin, Blair, etc…) right now represents the most pressing threat to civilization. Children cannot confront the ills of our societies while adults shun responsibilities with platitudes and excuses.
What was the greater crime? What destroyed more of civilization’s treasures? What made the world community more divided? September 11, 2001? Or, the George Bush response? I can’t take any more of the juvenile utterances coming from supposedly grown men. Can you teach backbone and make a stand against the criminal injustice associated with the doctrine of Bush Inc.?
Respectfully,
Otis G. Barlow

T. Guerber, It is fair to say that no religion condone such such meaningless slaughter but one should also be prepared to acknowledge the violent passages of the Koran. The concept of violent jihad for example, (as opposed to the peaceful concept, representing the internal struggle), requests the faithful to conquer the non-believer. While this may not represent Islam's true intent, there is no escaping the fact that it exist as well as many other idiosincrasies. Where are the compassion and mercy when one look at the harsh sentences of the Sharia which, in some countries, are applied to the full extend of the law. Where is the respect for women whose rights have been neglected for so long and everyday life not made easy when they are forbidden simple activities such as driving a car and must cover themselves in black when the heat is soaring while men wear long white robes? the list of cultural idiosincrasies is long and not worth mentioning.
I can understand the desire of peaceful Muslims to distance themselves from the loathsome acts of the terrorists. However it is disingenuous to insist that religion and its cultural components, so deeply ingrained in many Muslims,is not a factor. Moreover, it delays the day when moderate Muslims reform their faith from within. At present, it is still not clear if the will for such reforms will lead to lasting and meaningul changes. |
| |
|
Otis G. Barlow, September 25, 2004
Sir:
To Mr. T. Guerber, though I am not Muslim and I am very ignorant of the Faith. I do recognize a slanderous attempt to seem unbiased! I do not know if you follow the Teachings of Islam or not, but it is fair to say your knowledge is probably limited to the passages you cited. Which is dangerous and represents the thinking of the majority that support this neo-Crusade against Islam.
The sad truth is: if all mankind would practice the Teachings of his/her Faith there would be little impetus to impugn Religious diversity!
Respectfully,
Otis G. Barlow

Reader, thank you very much for such civilized way of writng an article,my problem I am not able to understand what happened to the mouslem young people, instead focussing on education, economic issues and trying to advance their countries and move them from the dark ages to modern life, they have gone mad about relegion, not even peacful relegion but in a fanatic and barbaric way.
relgion is peace, love, respect to others whoever they are,not because they are not mouslems you hate them and you kill them or to prejudice against them, this is barbarism not relegion.sir i can only blame the Imams and sheiks who teach the relegion, those are the ones who take the blame, and time she should be controlled to preach the relegion properly instead of spreading hate and creating fanatism,it is time for the saudi kingdom to take the lead instead allowing it to happen within its land ,when this time comes their will be peace and respect.(the wise one said" it is upto us to show the peolpe who we are by the way we behave and not the way we achieve" |

S Amin, . Please refer to a posting in one of these articles, posted as:
[Wellwisher, http://website.lineone.net/~jon.simmons/roy/peanutb.htm Here is a list of the countries that America has been at war with - and bombed - since the second world war: China (1945-46, 1950-53), Korea (1950-53), Guatemala (1954, 1967-69), Indonesia (1958), Cuba (1959-60), the Belgian Congo (1964), Peru (1965), Laos (1964-73), Vietnam (1961-73), Cambodia (1969-70), Grenada (1983), Libya (1986), El Salvador (1980s), Nicaragua (1980s), Panama (1989), Iraq (1991-99), Bosnia (1995), Sudan (1998), Yugoslavia (1999). And now Afghanistan. Certainly it does not tire - this, the most free nation in the world ] ( un quote)
Comment:-
Yes it did not tire and went into Iraq, now planning for Iran, then Syria, Then S. Arabia , what next ? Ask the Israeli's, they 've got the list , Bush, Blair, Cheney get revelations through Rumsfeld's team that brings them from the Capitol Hill-TELAVIV.
Its a matter of serious concen, historical significance & background and future predictor of logical / scientific outcome: To every action, there is equal and opposite reaction ( Newton's Laws ).
How can USA grow seeds of hatred, bloodshed, barbarianism, abuse resources of other nations, leave them poor, bombed, irradiated, orphaned and label them ignorant, uncivilized, terrorists and reap crops of love and appreciation, despite pouring lots of aid over these wounds and then hurt the wounds again and again. Same being done by European Governments. This is the root cause of First World versus the rest.
[THE FIRST WORLD'S PROGRESS IN EDUCATION,INDUSTRIES,SCIENCES....IS SUPERB, A BIG WELL DONE, IN CAPITALS, ALONG WITH THE AID GIVEN IN DISASTERS, CRISIS, THE DONATIONS ARE ACTS,
BEYOND DOUBT, APPRECIATED IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WORDS.]
Now returning to 9-11:-
Many 9-11s happened in the past, are happening and will happen to keep on track and justify this dominance. Problem is common people are too ignorant, short sighted, Hollywood fantasized, shopping obsessed..... and have all their time for worthless activities but no time for critical thought. May be they fear the reality and hide in the myths and dreams of self glorification.( For example you as American still don't know that the name of your country has been changed by this regime to THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY, where HYPOCRACY is called DEMOCRACY. Your capital has (with full effect from 1960s ) changed. The country is no more governed from Washington, but from TELAVIV. This is a crude example of : THOSE WHO STEAL OTHER PEOPLES' SOVERENITY,GET THEIR OWN SOVERENITY STOLEN, LIKEWISE.)
*There will be no threats from the many AXES OF EVIL
[They just want to mind their own business, leave them alone. If you chase a mouse it will scare away, but if you corner it, it will stand up to its defense, even without any WMD ,however powerless it may be, then you call it AXIS OF EVIL, TERRORIST, HAS WMD, THREATENS ISRAEL, WANTS A- BOMB, WHICH EVERYONE ON YOUR SIDE HAS IN HUGE NO.S, IS UNCIVILISED...IS THIS THE NEW WORLD DISORDER, GLOBALISATION, THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY- USA's NEW NAME, HYPO (DEMO)CRACY]. JUST THE ANGELS WILL FACE THEIR HOLY CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY ( NO INTERNET, COSMETICS TO MEDICINE, MOON TO MARS GIVES ANYONE LICENSE OF CIVILISATION FOR MASS KILLINGS, EXPLOITING / LOOTING FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS, ON SKIN COLOR AND RELIGIOUS DIVIDES. ( I HAVE DETAILED ACCOUNTS OF OIL- GOLD-OTHER MINNING,WEAPON INDUSTRIES' FIGURES FROM VARIOUS COUNTRIES / DECADES TO STATE THIS). THESE ARE ACTS OF BARBARIANISM CONTRARY TO CIVILISATION.
The Weather inside USA is as pleasant as in Saddam, Hitler, Stalin, Chengez Khan's Palaces. But it is not representative of reality. TODAYS AMERICANS ARE NO BETTER INFORMED THAN THE FRENCH QUEEN WHO SUGGESTED TO THE POOR PROTESTORS THAT IF THEY CAN'T GET THE BREAD, WHY DON'T THEY EAT CAKE. PLEASE DON'T BRUISE (NOT BROWSE) PASS THE REALITIE |
