Several feelings arise when one remembers the tragedy that took place in New York and Washington on September 11 th 2001, but strong condemnation tops these feelings. What is strongly condemned is the deliberate act by some youths of using their planning skills and abilities in evil and killing innocent people instead of using these abilities to serve their countries. Their countries are in need, on the national level

, of every thought, effort and experience in order to build their societies; they are also in need, on the international level, to play a role that strengthens these countries and enable them to counter challenges and threats.

Territories won't be liberated and nations won't develop, nor will objectives be achieved by means of antagonizing others who would be friends. Strength, power and acts that bring in friends should be the means of realizing these aims.

This is what crosses the mind when remembering September 11 th and its grave consequences that the world is still facing. When contemplating what happened on that day and the subsequent events that followed, I find myself facing several remarks that have to be loudly said regardless of who will find them upsetting and who will look at them satisfactorily.

First, what happened is definitely outrageous, but is not the end of the world. The attacks of September 11 th 2001 were not the first terrorist acts; many countries suffered similar horrifying and illicit acts. I do not want to go through what happened in Japan, Germany, France and Spain, whether in the near or distant past. Nor do I want to look through what is going on now in Palestine and Iraq. Suffice to mention here the years during which Egypt had suffered from evil and blind terrorism. Egypt then stood alone fighting that wave of terrorism without help or response from any of those who are now talking about the importance of joint efforts to fight and face terrorism. Those have, in fact, sheltered individuals who were trying to spread death and destruction in Egypt; they even refused to extradite the individuals involved in terrorism to face justice on the pretext of human rights and freedom of expression, but these justifications currently seems to be forgotten by these countries. Opinion, in fact, used to be expressed through bullets and bombs that took the lives of innocent people and destabilized countries.

Secondly, the difference between what happened then and what took place on September 11 th 2001 as well as the consequences in both cases is another expression of double standard. The victim this time is the US, which fought all its wars outside the American soil and away from its shores since the end of the American civil war. Therefore, what happened on September 11 th 2001 outraged the Americans, who felt a mixture of fury, astonishment, horror and intimidation. The US presumed that all other countries should join it in its war on terrorism because it is the sole superpower; the US wanted these countries to join this war on the basis of its own vision and under it leadership.

Third, amid this state of fury and panic in the US and Washington's desire to force the world to sympathize with its feelings and intentions, Israel managed to equate in American public mind between the legitimate Palestinian resistance against its occupation and the outrageous crime committed on the 11 th of September 2001. In fact, Israeli terrorism and crimes against Palestinian women, men, youth and children is parallel only to the crime committed on September 11 th by a group of misguided and lost youth, as the crime of both emanate from racial hatred and grudge toward the other.

Adam Steil, It is unfortunate that Mr. Mahir, after years of diplomatic activity, still finds it impossible to accept Israel as a friendly neighbor for his country. Worse still, 3 out of 5 of his points revolve around his perceived problems with that country. It is telling that the foreign minister of a country ostensibly at peace with Israel still harbors such manifest hostility. Perhaps Mr. Mahir should focus on eliminating the hate for Jews that is daily spewed from state-controlled Egyptian schools, newspapers and mosques, rather than only on Israeli shortcomings. Instead, he should try to foster tolerance. He could sart by returning his country's ambassador to Israel, who has been absent from his post for more than two years--in violation of the peace treaty his country signed.

A Miron, Now Mr. NOKLEBERG, Can you tell us you really feel! I am an American who lives only one state away from Mr.Nokleberg. I monitor various websites that feature articles about events in the Middle East. Some of these articles focus on the blaming of America for the worlds problems. Some provide an enlightened perspective to the events before and after 9-11. I truly believe that there are good people in the Middle East who are sad over the loss during 9-11. But I also believe these people are afraid to voice their opinion loud enough for their fellow Muslims to hear. Possibly for fear of ridicule, retribution, or worse. My heart sank to my knees when I watched the celebration and rejoicing in the West Bank, Egypt, Syria, Iran and Iraq, over the deaths of all those innocent souls. I felt like the world had just turned three clicks to the side of evil. To watch another human being chanting and dancing in celebration of the death/slaughter of someone that didn’t even know, someone that did him or her no harm, someone who’s only act to justify this, was to show up for work, attend daycare, or be a passenger on an airliner, was pure unadulterated evil in it worse form. And for this, the perpetrators will supposedly find a place in heaven with Allah surrounded by 40 virgins? I think not! I also remember when the 2003 earthquake hit the Iranian city of Bam killing 15000. The local radio stations were constantly providing places people could send disaster recovery donations, clothing and food items to help in the relief for the survivors. There was no dancing in the streets in celebration of the losses in Iran. There was no televised celebration by the masses in this country. For me, there was just sadness for the families that lost loves ones. I have no doubt that this will not be the last act of terrorism to be perpetrated on US soil. I truly believe that if a terrorist group had a nuclear weapon they would lose no sleep using it in one of our major cities. They would kill millions of innocent men, women and children without reservation. And again their would be celebration and rejoicing in the West Bank, Egypt, Syria, Iran. But I fear that celebration would be short-lived, very short lived! So before this happens, may I suggest that all men of good will stand up and be heard? Jason Thornhill, NOKLEBERG, PAUL: Whilst I may agree in principle with the odd point in your article, I disagree with your way of going about the whole issue, like swearing and making out like its just a fight between you and someone that may or may not turn up on your back yard. I think these issues should be dealt with by governments and not people mouthing off in forums and protests which in reality make no difference to the situation whatsoever!I agree with protesting about things on moral grounds but I think its best to remain realistic about these things and not expect governments to change policy based on protests!

sanaullah yousaf, Today (August 6) is exactly sixty-one years to the day that the world recoiled to the most ghastly tragedy perpetrated by one nation upon another. The event: the nuclear massacre of the Japanese city of Hiroshima by the US. Over a hundred thousand people were instantaneously incinerated, within the wink of an eye. While to this day, Western (read American) academics and historians do not tire of maligning Hitler for his gas chambers, they conveniently overlook and the way the United States Air Force turned the whole city of Hiroshima into a massive gas chamber within the wink of an eye. All these six decades, the tragedy has failed to haunt America's psyche. There have been a whole lot of treatises defending the US action and many-an-attempt at guilt effacement but all pretty clumsy ones. The late Ronald Reagan, on the eve of the fortieth anniversary of the holocaust, in his characteristically jingoistic manner reminiscent of a Hollywood wild west epic, defended the action, saying, "The US did absolutely the right thing. We did it 'for peace' and were history to repeat itself, we would do it again". Some peace! If peace has to be achieved by dispatching a hundred thousand people into eternity in the most painful of manner, then one wonders if peace really is a worthwhile commodity. However, Reagan's defence of the action is not the only one in the long list of self-effacement explanations offered for the gruesome tragedy. Today we see the US most belligerently forbidding other nations to conduct nuclear tests, Iran being the latest target of her jingoistic threats. She forgets that while other countries conduct tests taking care to prevent any loss of life, the US conducted them at the cost of 200,000 lives in 1945, the only nation to have demonstrated the monstrous power of the atom bomb. The US leaders seem to have arrogated the right to savagery exclusively to them. The Readers' Digest has its own justification for the US turning Hiroshima into a giant incinerator. According to the Readers' Digest Pictorial History of World War II, the atom bomb was dropped over the Japanese city because the allies were just not being able to stem the tide of Japanese advance southwards. However, an objective probe into history totally demolishes this argument and it is a fact, which the few survivors of the war would testify to, that emperor Hirohito's emissaries were already negotiating surrender with the allies when the bomb was dropped. True the Japanese military campaign was an absolute whirlwind and all British possessions in the Far East fell like ninepins. General Percival of Britain surrendered at Singapore with a hundred thousand troops without firing a shot. However, once the Japanese reached Papua New Guinea, they got steely resistance from the Australian troops till their campaign lost its sting. Another justification offered by the Readers' Digest account is that the architects of the atom bomb were just not aware of the potential of the murderous device to wreak havoc. They never realised it would be so destructive. However, just as there's never a perfect murder, there's never a perfect lie, for in the same account the authors tell us that special goggles had been devised to prevent the crew of the B-29 bomber going blind on account of the flash resulting from the explosion. A special mechanism had been devised whereby the bomb was to explode eighteen-hundred feet above the ground for, it was determined that the earth's crust under the city would crack were the bomb to hit the ground. Besides, once the monstrous scale of destruction became clear to the perpetrators of the holocaust, why did they drop another bomb over Nagasaki. Just three days later? Even a moron would know that this was not at all unintentional. Nagasaki met that horrific fate because while the bomb dropped over Hiroshima was a uranium-based bomb, the one dropped over Nagasaki was plutonium-based and<

Helpless in the US, I read several of the comments on this page. There are many different opinions. It is amazing, to say the least. Some people used vulgar words to express anger or get a point across. Others denounced characteristics of other people i.e. their race, religion, etc. Just on this web page people are fighting. When will it end? I hardly understand why evil things happen in the world. I'm only 14. But i don't think that makes a difference. Do you adults even undersatnd why people do acts of evil? What makes you say the things you say? More often than not it seems that going to war with somebody is the only way to settle a fight. And how do we get rid of evil? Are we supposed to fight fire with fire? I know that we can't sit down with terrorists and talk about it over tea. Our world doesn't work that way. But what else can we do? Do we go to war or let the evil acts continue? Just reading the comments on this web page make me feel hopeless. You can't judge people based solely on race or religon or anything!You ever heard the expression "Never judge a book by its cover"? If we can't be at peace on a simple website, how can we expect the world to get along?

The answers for that is to be possitive and patience in anyways,dont you know that this world is just a playground for us? And we are not gooing to live here forever as in NOBODY will stay forever... We all return to the Kingdom of God. It depends... if you do more good deeds then you will meet God as your reward but if you don't and there is another reward for that. We must think of our salvation ahead of us while we are still alive and have a chance to know the truth and that is to know your real God -who created you so that we may ask the forgiveness that we deserves or else it will be too late for us...
