MAKKAH, 19 December 2007 — For many people residing in the Hejaz, Haj is an opportunity to reap rewards by serving pilgrims. Across Makkah, do-gooders can be seen doing small but immeasurable acts of deeds to serve the guests of God. Standing by a table under a banner with the words “In the Way of God” written in bold letters, one man, who asked his name not be published, was busy distributing free tea, coffee, milk, dates and water to pilgrims. Abdul Aziz is another generous local standing in Mina distributing yogurt, milk and fruit to pilgrims. Unbothered by the scorching heat, Abdul Aziz said he was only seeking reward from Allah. “The pilgrims’ prayers are more than enough for me,” he said. Abdullah Ali was busily distributing mouth covers and umbrellas to pilgrims to protect them from the heat and prevent them from catching viruses. Another man, who asked his name not be published, was busily arranging the distribution of beverages to pilgrims. “Drinks with vitamin C are important for pilgrims. They need to remain healthy and stay strong,” he said. Together with a group of 18 friends, Muhammad Hassan from Jeddah is distributing water and juice to pilgrims. The group depends on donations from people in Jeddah and Makkah. “We’ve been sending SMS text messages to people informing them what we’ve been planning,” said Hassan, adding that people as far afield as the Southern Region have been willing to donate. “We’ve been doing this for three years now. I like to serve pilgrims if I’m not performing the Haj,” said Hassan. Hassan said his group has prepared a number of vehicles to carry drinks to the holy sites. “We’ve had to get an approval from the Ministry of Commerce, but it is worth it,” said Hassan, adding that the group has over 3,000 boxes of water and juice for distribution among pilgrims. |
