A new study by the University of Pennsylvania (School of Medicine) shows that excess intake of simple carbohydrates (carbs), like sweets and chocolate, increases fat storage and weight gain. This is due to glucose and insulin imbalance. This in turn leads to a feeling of constant hunger and an intense desire to eat more sugars. We sit with Therapeutic Nutrition Specialist, Dr. Sharif Al-Aslami, who recommends a diet that helps reduce the desire to consume foods containing a high proportion of fat or refined sugar. Sugars, along with starches and fiber, belong to a nutrient group called carbohydrates — the main source of energy that the body needs to perform vital functions and physical...
Last week, I received an e-mail from a reader, called Robert Blaskiewicz. He happens to be an activist for a group called Skeptics for the Protection of Cancer Patients. Providing affordable gym access for patients ensures compliance, said Gibbs Saunders of Healthworks Community Fitness, a nonprofit gym in Dorchester that has...

The discovery of huge oil supplies in the Arabian Gulf triggered an international struggle for the control of the oil fields. This East and West rivalry led to the creation of OPEC and to the development of petrochemical enterprises in the countries of the Arabian Gulf, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. In his book ‘Molecules, Mind and Matter: How the Arabian Gulf Became a Global Petrochemical Hub’, Dr. Abdulwahab Al-Sadoun who began his career as a senior researcher at SABIC Research and Development Center in Saudi Arabia gives a firsthand account of the...
