RIYADH, 26 November 2006 — Exceptional secondary students in the Kingdom will soon have an opportunity to participate in a six-week program at two of the most prestigious American universities, Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and the Massachusetts Institute for Technology (MIT) in Boston.

The program is under the auspices of the King Abdul Aziz & His Companions Foundation for the Gifted (KACFG). Expected to be held in the summer of 2007, it is part of collaboration efforts between KACFG and universities worldwide to identify gifted Saudi students and nurture their talents.

“Students who believe they are exceptional are welcomed to contact the foundation for approval,” said Dr. Mahmoud Naqadi, adviser to the secretary-general. The final date for tendering requests is Dec. 14.

Dr. Naqadi said the program was an excellent opportunity for students. “The experience will no doubt affect them in their future careers, especially since we are talking about top universities such as Johns Hopkins and MIT,” he said.

According to the official, the foundation has certain rules for applicants. The applicant must be a Saudi national and 17 years old according to the Gregorian calendar. He or she must be from a public secondary school majoring in scientific studies. The applicant also must present proof of winning an award in natural science or mathematics and possess excellent command of spoken and written English. The final condition is that the applicant must attend and pass the test set by the foundation. Dr. Naqadi said that gifted students can apply by contacting the administration in Riyadh at 01-2011066 or 01-2011088 (Ext: 107).

KACFG is also receiving requests for nominations for its fourth “Scientific Award” expected to be announced next year. The competition is open to Saudis and non-Saudis in four categories: Under 12 years, 13-15 years, 16-18 years, 19 to 25 years. Both male and female students can apply.
