Campaign to promote tolerance among Saudi youth kicks off

A campaign to promote tolerance in society kicked off in Jeddah on Thursday under the slogan “A Tolerant Person is A Winner” with the aim to promote youths’ tolerance to challenges they may face in society.
The 3-month campaign was launched by a Saudi non-profit organization ‘Rekaaz’ as part of a social responsibility drive targeting youth to inculcate ethics and teach them that lack of tolerance among individuals is a major social problem.
The program was initiated following the findings of a specialized study conducted in the GCC by Rekaaz on social problems in society.
Ahmad Asiri, Rekaaz’s secretary-general said that the campaign activities will be implemented in the six major cities of Riyadh, Yanbu, Jeddah, Taif, Abha and Shargiyah. They include an Internet-based competition on tolerance that targets youth hubs. Maher Zain, the famous nasheed singer, will be the official singer of the campaign.
“We chose the topic of the campaign on the basis of a study conducted by “Rekaaz” on youth’s social problems in the GCC, where the study showed that verbal and social violence and family disintegration are the major problems facing the youth leading to irresponsible behavior. The study revealed that 51 percent of the youth suffer from lack of acceptance by others and intolerance while 31 percent said that the negative social problems include intolerance, bad behavior and disrespecting seniors and the elderly,” he said.
He further said that their campaign “A Tolerant Person is A Winner” targets youth of both genders aged between 15 and 25 with innovative and educational activities at gyms and shopping malls to promote healthy interaction between society and the youth.
“We are open to new ideas and partnerships, in addition to expanding the ethics campaigns in the Kingdom to reach out to other regions and different sections of the population in our society.”
He explained that the campaign will have a video-making, photography and storytelling competition about promotion of tolerance. The participants can submit their work on the Rekaaz website at www.rekaaz.com. A team of specialists will evaluate the submissions and the winners will be announced by a panel of judges and the audience through voting.
“Rekaaz aims to promote religious and human values to improve the quality of social life for young people of both sexes. It is also engaged with civil society and government organizations to strengthen understanding, dialogue, acceptance of others, and ties between society members,” he added.
