Dates factory shut down in Qatif

RIYADH: A plant that was distributing dates of unknown origin was shut down in Qatif for violating local laws.
An official from the Ministry of Commerce and Investment closed the plant and confiscated 4.5 tons of dates to avoid distribution to the local market. The dates had expired and did not indicate the countries of origin, the official said.
During inspection, it was discovered that illegal laborers forged validity dates then distributed the produce to various sales outlets.
They were packaged ready for distribution to the local markets. The factory also produced syrup from the expired dates.
Inspectors found a lack of hygienic practices in the production rooms, and large quantities of counterfeit stickers ready to be placed on packages.
The ministry inspection team handed the workers over to security authorities for further action.
The ministry reiterated that it will not hesitate to impose legal penalties on those involved in commercial fraud and who put the health and safety of consumers at risk.
The ministry urged all consumers to lodge complaints and observations through its consumer call center (1900) or through the application of a commercial violation report at any time via their smartphones.
