Citizen rewarded for uncovering usurped endowment

MAKKAH: The Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments has awarded a Saudi citizen SR152,000 for bringing an unknown waqf (endowment) building in Makkah’s Misfalah district to its attention.

Saleh Al-Asheikh, minister of Islamic affairs and endowments, expressed his thanks to the man, Abdul Aziz bin Abdul Malik Khayyat, for bringing the building to the ministry’s attention. The building is part of the endowments of the Grand Mosque.
Khaled bin Abdullah Al-Abdullatif, acting undersecretary at the ministry, said the reward is five percent of the value of the building, which was SR152.271 million. He said the building is known as the Abdul Malik Munshi Waqf.
He said the reward was paid to the citizen after all legal and Shariah procedures to ensure that the building is actually a waqf property were completed. The ministry has asked all citizens to look for unknown waqf buildings and report them immediately to the authorities.
