The US Geological Survey said the quake struck 84 miles (135 km) northeast of Iquique at a depth of 51.8 miles (83.3 km).
The world’s No. 3 copper mine Collahuasi, jointly owned by Anglo American and Xstrata, said workers had felt the tremor, but it had not affected its operations.
Quake-prone Chile’s economy is still recovering from a magnitude 8.8 earthquake just over a year ago, which hammered towns, infrastructure and industries in south-central Chile and killed more than 500 people.
