THE HAGUE, Netherlands: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is visiting the Netherlands as part of a European tour to drum up support for a plan to seek UN recognition of a Palestinian state.

Abbas is meeting Dutch Queen Beatrix before talks with Foreign Minister Uri Ronsenthal and Prime Minister Mark Rutte in The Hague.
Thursday’s visit comes days after the West Bank Palestinian leadership decided to seek UN recognition in September of a state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem.
Israel has denounced the proposal, saying it torpedoes efforts to reach a negotiated solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict.
European Union nations are working to forge a common position on the Palestinian initiative.
