Are we really free?

The media has succeeded to engage us away from our life issues and day-to-day matters. It has distracted us with disasters and major political issues with which we are obsessed and before which we are helpless. We are like a man who is provided a cup and is asked to empty the sea…. IMPOSSIBLE!

The outcome is activation of our feeling of inability and wasting our mental and emotional capabilities in matters distant from the vital issues of our livelihood.

Maybe it is true that a mind open to all action resources generate ideas. However, such ideas are in fact the outcome of the material introduced to the gates of the mind open to everything. For the first moment, they may be thought to be harmless or having less effect. However, this is illogical as thoughts generate actions; bad or naïve thought shall only generate actions of the same type. The effect of such actions shall not be personal but shall extend to inflect upon the people surrounding us.

This resulted in enhancing our feeling of disability, lack of problem-solving mentality, wasting our mental and emotional faculties, and leading us away from considering the vital issues of our life and that of our people, instead of allowing us to enhance the values of our achievements with our own ideas, and initiations, developing our surrounding society by our creative imagination, and serving our immediate environment by our own resolutions.

It is true that the mind, which is open to all sources of action, generates ideas, but these ideas are shaped by the input that penetrated the mind. At first sight, we may think that those ideas are harmless or have no influence on others; a premise that is illogical, because the ideas lead to actions, and bad or simple ideas generate actions of the same kind.

Hence, their impact will afflict the whole society not only the individuals who adopt them. This is the core of the problem: News that has nothing to do with us, nor can we resolve, may effect us and those whom we love. Here lies the harm.

Mind is the most blessed gift Allah has conferred on us, and we advise to have broad minds not just open minds, provided that we control the gates of our minds and do not let others control them, otherwise, it will be a huge systematized operation of brainwash. (This is almost what is going on).

We already said that unrestrictedly broad minds will be enslaved by the information diffused by the open media, and consequently lose their freedom, creativity, and even their values that should remain well-established and intact. It will also be jammed up with information that will tie them up like ropes in a surging open sea. Can you survive the sea depth while you are tied up with ropes?

Mind, in case it wanted to be free in thinking and choosing, must be broad and heedful, to rid itself of the ropes, and control what enters it or comes out of it.

Najeeb, I can certainly agree with you that each of us, individually, should control our exposure to information. But if you are suggesting that someone else should control that same exposure, then I'd remind you of what Thomas Jefferson said:

"Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter."
