Unlawful in Ramadan, but not in other months?

By MUHAMMAD SALAHUDDIN | AL-MADINAH

EGYPTIAN daily newspaper Al-Ahram claims censorship of Egyptian television has led to a “no sex and nudity” policy during the holy month of Ramadan.

A number of soap operas have been censored because they contained sexually explicit or suggestive scenes.

The censorship department also objected to scenes featuring a gratuitous amount of smoking and drug taking, which it says are abundant in most soap operas.

Scenes that ended up on the cutting-room floor include one featuring a female dancer dancing erotically in a bar.

The department felt that such footage was not suitable for viewing during the month of Ramadan.

It cut out three scenes from a soap opera where the male lead is seen in his underwear, with the female lead drinking alcohol in his apartment.

The second scene shows the man smoking drugs and the third shows drug traffickers smoking hashish.

The question that needs to be raised here is this. Are these scenes only considered Haram only in the month of Ramadan or are they classed as forbidden in every month of the year?

The promiscuity that is shown in all our visual media represents the true meaning of art for many people. Art, in fact, is more sublime and is there to spread ethical values and serve society.

It is really regrettable that the concept of low art is dominating the minds of many people who call themselves artists. They are gaining their living from substandard art.

The incomes of female singers and dancers have reached unbelievable figures. They are much more than the incomes of scientists and thinkers.

Al-Ahram quoted a writer of one of the censored soap operas. He said the cuts were meaningless and unjustified. He also claimed that cutting out any scene is a crime against the writers and the cast.

It is haram always if it is possible. If not Ramadan should be respected at least. 11 months of sin is better then 12 months of sin.

^That's not really how the typical Muslim should (or be encouraged to) think.

People have started behaving as if all the months besides the months of Ramadan are a free-ticket to showing all the Haram on television commercials and soaps (and hence encouraging such Haram). By banning all this in the month of Ramadan alone, you're not respecting the month of Ramadan. You're showing how disrespectful you are towards Islam and the rules set by it (the rest of the year).

Finally, the encouragement of good deeds in the month of Ramadan are meant to boost the Muslim morale every year; so that they can continue the same, the rest of the year.

Unfortunately, people are trying to make the month of Ramadan look like a vacation from Haram!

These soap operas are not only played in Egypt but in every muslim countries, and of course we should put a stop to such soap operas that exposing our children to Evil Deeds of the western Society. Shame to our leaders and our society who are willing to ebrase these kind of life styles. Instead we need to create our own Islamic Soap Operas that will teach all the nations around the world the moral values of life and the religion. It hurts me a lot when I see our leaders been corrupted every single of them, Shame on you all.
