Contestants from Makkah win Qur’an contest

RIYADH: Contestants from Makkah province were declared champions once again during the 9th Holy Qur’an Reading Contest held at the Philippine Embassy on Aug. 26-27.

Aminollah Mimbala Omar from Makkah and Noor Garingan Jadoon of the International Philippine School in Jeddah (IPSJ) bagged the championship awards for the professional or adults’ category and non-professional or students’ category, respectively.

Omar won SR7,000, a 32” plasma TV, an iPod, a notebook computer, as well as assorted home appliances and food items. Jadoon received SR3,000, a 32” plasma TV, a digital camera and assorted home appliances and food items.

The other contestants were awarded for their efforts with cash prizes ranging from SR1,000 to SR5,000, assorted home appliances and food items that were similarly given to the champions.

Ambassador Antonio P. Villamor, who led the competition, highlighted in his welcome remarks that the affair was carefully prepared “to provide a venue for a timely reflection and interaction on the unique and most special gift of Islam to humanity that opens our spiritual eye to realize and be thankful for our life and manifold blessings we have received in this material world.”

The event commenced after the taraweeh prayer and was hosted by Attaché Abdul Hamid Alawi. Attaché Ibrahim T. Zailon led the opening prayer while Attaché Cotawato M. Arimao introduced the panel of judges headed by Sheikh Mohammad Waleed Al-Swaidan and composed of three other distinguished members from the World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY).

In accordance with the usual tradition, the event ended with a feast shared by everyone during the suhur dinner after the closing prayer delivered by Al-Swaidan.
