Philippine consulate holds iftar party

RIYADH: The Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah held an iftar party recently for Filipino Muslim community leaders at its function hall on Aug. 25.

“It was delightful for the staff and personnel to have a candid and warm meal with the guests, who came from 35 different organizations,” Consul General Ezzedin H. Tago told Arab News.

A sumptuous Arabic meal was prepared for the occasion.

Tago said the occasion served as an opportunity to strengthen “our Islamic faith and engender the spirit of brotherhood among us Muslim brothers.”

He added that it had been a great pleasure for the consulate to host an iftar annually for Filipino Muslims since he assumed his post as consul general in Jeddah.

“I am looking forward to another iftar party with Filipino-Muslim community leaders when Ramadan comes around next year,” Tago said.

The community leaders who attended expressed appreciation to the consulate for holding the party.

“It was an opportunity for Filipino Muslims from Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah to get together and strengthen their Islamic faith,” said Jauhari Usman, chapter commander of the Order of the Knights of Rizal-Jeddah Chapter.

Ali Ditucalan, adviser for the United Bangsamoro Council, added that the iftar party was also an opportunity to meet fellow Filipino Muslims for the first time.

“Coming as we do from different provinces in the southern Philippines, the iftar party paved the way for us not only to meet fellow Filipino Muslims but also make new friends as well. This is why we thank Consul General Ezzedin Tago for his initiative,” he said.

Iftar, the evening meal when Muslims throughout the world break their fast during the holy month of Ramadan, is a religious observance and is often done as a community. People usually gather to break their fast together straight after the call for Maghreb prayer at sunset.
