Fire causes outage in city’s 4 districts

JEDDAH: A fire at the power station inside Prince Fawaz district southeast of Jeddah caused loss of electricity in four districts. Many people took their families outside their houses in search of cool air.

Abdul Aziz Motawae, manager of Saudi Electricity Company, said the fire damaged cables inside the power station. “We supplied electricity to 90 percent of the affected subscribers from alternative sources while repair work was in progress,” he said. He hoped normal power supplies would resume within the next four hours. The maintenance team was present at the station soon after receiving information about the fire, the manager said.

According to an official statement issued by the company, the power outage took place at 7.08 a.m. on Monday, adding that it caused the loss of 58 megawatts of electricity. “Within two hours power supply resumed to 95 percent of about 10,000 subscribers in the affected districts of Prince Fawaz, Adel, Rawabi and Muntazahat in addition to parts of the Jamia District,” it said. “We were able to control the fire with the support of Civil Defense,” the company said, adding that nobody was injured as a result of the fire.
