IDB vows funds for Haiti aid

JEDDAH: The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) has, in line with UN requests for donations, allocated $5 million for the reconstruction of schools in Haiti.

The donation follows IDB President Dr.  Ahmed Mohammed Ali’s letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressing the IDB’s willingness to contribute to aid efforts in Haiti. Under normal circumstances, the IDB only contributes to member countries, but has made an exception due to the scale of the tragedy.

The IDB president also said that contributions will be taken from the IDB Wakf Fund and asked the UN to assign a special officer with whom it can coordinate.

In a related development, the IDB recently signed a SR56.2 million ($15 million) agreement with the Sudanese Chamber of Endowments.

The funds have been allocated to develop two plots of land in Jeddah located near the King Khalid Road.

The land totaling an area of around 7,000 square meters will include shopping areas and residential buildings.

The agreement was signed by Dr. Al-Taieb Mukhtar Al-Taieb, general secretary of the Sudanese Chamber of Endowments, and Dr.  Ahmed Mohammed Ali.

The signing was witnessed by Dr. Azhari Al-Tigari, the Sudanese minister of guidance and awqaf.

During the pact signing ceremony, the Sudanese delegation updated the IDB president on developments in Sudanese endowments, and the country’s plans to develop its endowment properties.
