Cyclist’s death was an accident: Police

By WALAA HAWARI | ARAB NEWS

RIYADH: Police have confirmed the death of a British man killed by a car was nothing more than a tragic accident.

Spokesperson Maj. Sami Al-Shwaerikh ruled out the possibility that John Currie, the Briton who worked for BAE Systems, was “deliberately” run down as reported by a British newspaper.

“It was an unfortunate road accident with no criminal activity behind it,” said Al–Shwaerikh.

He added that the recklessness of the youth, who is in his 20s, was the main reason behind the accident. According to reports, 45-year-old Currie and three other cyclists were cut off by local youths driving in two cars on a main road on the outskirts of Riyadh on Feb. 25.

The Sunday Telegraph in the UK reported that one of the vehicles clipped one of the cyclists, causing him to fall off his bike, then allegedly turned around and drove straight into them.

Currie was said to have smashed against the vehicle’s windscreen, and he later died from his injuries.

Arab News reported on Monday that sources at the British Embassy in Riyadh had already ruled out any foul play.

For the Saudi police "he recklessness of the youth, who is in his 20s, was the main reason behind the accident" is not a criminal offence. Just what it would be if "the youth" was from India or Bangladesh and the victim a Saudi ?!

Last week I also happened to witnessed a Bangladeshi was crashed by truck on Dammam-Khobar highway yeah it tragic but as per norms Cyclist are not allowed on Highways there should be separate lane or they should use parks etc for their exercise but I am not justifying this rackless killing infact we need to train all Drivers here especially Saudia and must have more surveillance to stop this type of accidents.

Did we really expect anything else? Since when is there any "justice" for anyone other than Saudis in this country.
