JEDDAH: The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice is a government organization that can be present at any tourist and entertainment facility when needed, its chairman has said.

Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Humain was speaking at the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with King Abdulaziz University (KAU) in Jeddah on Monday. The two bodies are to cooperate in scientific research, information technology and other fields.

"The human rights unit recently established within the commission will accept any case presented to it. Its workforce and methods will also be heavily promoted," he said.

Sheikh Al-Humain signed the MOU with the university’s undersecretary for business and knowledge creativity, Dr. Ahmad ibn Hamid Naqadi.

"The signing of the MOU with KAU is part of a commission drive to sign agreements with other Saudi universities," he said.

"The agreement does not mean that Haia (commission) staff will be present at the university. Rather, it covers various fields including scientific research, knowledge communications, promotion of skills, organizing training sessions, seminars and conferences in addition to community service, improvement of the basic infrastructure and IT."

He added that the five-year MOU was aimed at achieving cooperation with the university for the welfare of society.

"The agreement is aimed at interpreting the directives of our leaders to spread the culture of moderation according to the Qur'an and Sunnah," he said.

Sheikh Al-Humain said commission members would benefit from the university’s resources in terms of research, consultations, training, conferences, workshops and exchange of expertise.

"Under the agreement, we will open channels of dialogue with male and female students," he said.

Dr. Naqadi described the signing of the MOU as a quantum leap in the development of the commission as it attempts to stay in touch with ongoing societal changes in the Kingdom.
