Series on Palestinian plight stirs emotions

JEDDAH: The screening of "Cry of a Stone," a Turkish television series on Israeli atrocities against Palestinians, has proven instrumental in mobilizing Arab support for the Palestinians. The series’ first episode was aired on satellite channel MBC on Saturday.

After watching the first episode, many Arabs, especially Palestinians, living in Gulf countries expressed their anger against Israel for its inhuman and oppressive policies in occupied territories.

MBC officials said the channel has been broadcasting the series, which has 20 episodes, at 4 p.m. local time. There was pressure on the channel not to air the series, as it exposes Israel's barbarity against the Palestinians.

The program is expected to attract a large number of viewers throughout the Arab world.

Mohammed Al-Adalouni, a Palestinian who works for a tourism company in Jeddah, told Arab News that his children were shocked after seeing the treatment of Israeli forces against their compatriots.

"My family and I will put aside time to watch the series every day," he said.

"This work deserves to be seen not because it unveils the suffering of the Palestinians but because it exposes the harsh realities in the occupied land," he said.

Al-Adalouni said he and his children were traumatized after seeing the scenes of Israeli barbarity, which does not differentiate between children, women and the elderly.

Khaled Qashoue, another Palestinian who works for a contracting company, said the first episode was enough for him to realize the horrendous situation of his people living in the occupied territories. He hoped that the series would win a large number of viewers.

Adnan Al-Majali, a Jordanian who is in the medical services, said he was disturbed after seeing a fight between fully armed Israeli forces and unarmed Palestinians in a Jerusalem district. The Palestinians only used stones and light arms to confront the soldiers.

A group of youths has launched a campaign in favor of the series through Internet websites and chat rooms and urged the public to watch it in order to understand the situation in Palestine.

Rabie Baghdadi, who is an expert in drama production, said he expected "Cry of a Stone" to win a large number of Arab viewers throughout the world. The series, which was initially produced for 70 million Turkish speakers, is now being watched by an estimated 400 million Arabs.

As an American who worked in the occupied territories doing humanitarian work for an NGO, I saw first hand the treatment of not only the Palestinians, but internationals, like myself, who were there to help the Palestinians. Do not pass this off as being just propaganda. No propaganda could ever be as bad as what it is truly like in Palestine. It is about time the world learns the truth.

What? After 63 years the Arabs are only now figuring it out? Anyone with adult memories of pre Israel Palestine is older than the faces on Mt. Rushmore. I suppose in another hundred years the Arabs might actually do something constructive.
