CLEVELAND: Josh Tomlin took a shutout into the eighth inning against Alex Rodriguez and New York to win his major league debut with Cleveland, 4-1 on Tuesday night.

Getting one more chance at hitting his 600th homer with two outs in the ninth inning, Rodriguez grounded into a forceout to shortstop to end the game. A-Rod went 0 for 4 on his 35th birthday.

The 25-year-old Tomlin outpitched former Indians ace CC Sabathia (13-4), handing the left-hander his first loss in 12 starts since May 23.

Tomlin (1-0) gave up one run and three hits after having his contract purchased from Triple-A Columbus. He left after allowing Robinson Cano’s leadoff double in the eighth. Cano scored on a groundout.

Chris Perez worked the ninth for his 10th save.

Shin-Soo Choo had three hits and Matt LaPorta two RBIs for Cleveland.

Sabathia gave up nine hits and four runs over seven innings. He was 9-0 with a 2.22 ERA over his previous 11 starts.

Rays 3  Tigers 2: At St. Petersburg, Florida, James Shields gave up two runs over 6 2-3 innings, and Matt Joyce hit a tiebreaking RBI double for Tampa Bay.

Shields (9-9) allowed nine hits, one walk and had seven strikeouts one day after teammate Matt Garza threw the Rays’ first no-hitter. Tampa Bay went up 3-2 when Joyce had a broken-bat run-scoring double during the sixth.

Carlos Pena put the Rays ahead 2-0 on a two-run homer in the first.

Detroit’s Justin Verlander (12-6) allowed three runs and five hits in his second complete game of the season.

Rafael Soriano , the Rays’ fourth reliever, struggled in the ninth before getting his 27th save.

Red Sox 4  Angels 2: At Anaheim, California, John Lackey pitched into the eighth inning to win in his return to Angel Stadium, and Jed Lowrie’s two-run double in the seventh that put Boston ahead.

Darnell McDonald and Marco Scutaro scored Boston’s first two runs on a two-out drive by Lowrie in just his sixth game of the season after missing nearly four months with mononucleosis.

Lackey (10-5) gave up seven hits and left after Bobby Abreu’s homer on his 124th pitch.

Jonathan Papelbon finished for his 24th save.

Adrian Beltre added an RBI double in the eighth, and Scutaro scored on a throwing error in the ninth. Scutaro had three hits, McDonald had two in a last-minute start, and Lowrie had two doubles.

Jered Weaver (9-7) allowed six hits in seven innings and struck out eight in his fourth loss in five starts.

The Angels have lost six of seven.

Blue Jays 8  Orioles 2: At Toronto, Jose Bautista hit two home runs, giving him a major league-leading 30, and Ricky Romero pitched 7 2-3 strong innings in Toronto’s 11th straight win over Baltimore.

It was the fifth multihomer game of the season for Bautista, who has connected in three straight and leads the AL with 10 in July.

Bautista hit a three-run drive off Kevin Millwood in the first inning and added a two-run shot off Alfredo Simon in the eighth.

Romero (8-7) retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced and didn’t allow a run until the eighth. He gave up two runs, walked one and struck out eight.

Millwood (2-10) allowed six runs, five earned, and 10 hits in 5 1-3 innings and is winless in four starts since posting his only two victories of the season.

White Sox 11  Mariners 0: At Chicago, Alexei Ramirez , Andruw Jones and Paul Konerko homered for Chicago.

Ramirez finished with three hits and three RBIs and Jones drove in three runs for the White Sox, who led 8-0 after three innings. A.J. Pierzynski hit a two-out, two-run single in Chicago’s four-run first against Ryan Rowland-Smith (1-10).

Ramirez, who singled in a run in the first, is 8 for 12 with five RBIs in his last three games, including six hits in consecutive games against Seattle.

The Mariners have lost 18 of their last 24 games and are 6-18 in July. They were shut out for the seventh time and are last in the majors in several offensive categories.

Gavin Floyd (6-8) allowed four hits in seven innings. Rowland-Smith allowed 11 runs and 11 hits in five innings.

Twins 11 Royals 2: At Kansas City, Missouri, Danny Valencia drove in three runs, and Carl Pavano won his eighth straight decision as Minnesota completed the worst three-game pitching span in Kansas City history.

In their last three games, the Royals have been beaten 12-6 by the Yankees and 19-1 and 11-2 by the Twins, snapping the team record of 40 runs allowed in three consecutive games. The 53 hits they have given up is the team record for three consecutive games.

Joe Mauer , Michael Cuddyer and J.J. Hardy all had two RBIs for the Twins, who totaled 19 hits one night after getting 20.

The Twins have won six of seven and over their past four games against Baltimore and Kansas City they have 47 runs and 72 hits.

Rangers 3 Athletics 1, 10 innings: At Arlington, Texas,  Nelson Cruz hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th to lift Texas.

Rangers starter Cliff Lee struck out a career-high 13 and scattered five hits in a nine-inning no-decision.

With the game tied at 1, Josh Hamilton drew a one-out walk off Michael Wertz (2-2) and Cruz followed with his homer.

Lee, who remains stuck on 99 career victories, had the most strikeouts for the Rangers since Aaron Sele’s 13 on Aug. 12, 1999, against Detroit. Lee didn’t walk a batter and has issued only seven walks in 17 starts this season.

Oakland advanced a runner to third with two outs in the 10th, but Neftali Feliz (2-2) struck out pinch-hitter Cliff Pennington .
