Get pampered at the Spa by Clarins

By MARRIAM MOSSALLI, MARRIAM.MOSSALLI@ARABNEWS.COM

As I sip on Japanese green tea, and gaze out onto the glistening Red Sea, I pity the person who isn’t me. That’s what just an hour-long massage at Jeddah’s most luxurious and, probably most exclusive, spa will do to you. It’ll make you write like Hemingway and feel like a pretentious princess.

This is because the SPA by Clarins at the Qasr Al-Sharq Hotel has the most picturesque view of our corniche and provides exceptional service, fit for a royal. You’ll have no choice, but to transform.

“It’s really exclusive and quite private,” explains Amani Amin, Spa Manager. The spa is not only exclusive; it’s reclusive too. Located on the top floor of the Waldorf-Astoria hotel, you feel miles away from home and all the everyday stresses that are attached to it. “Even the colors of the interior were intentionally chosen to provide a sense of tranquility to help you feel relaxed,” reveals Amin.

Relaxed. Pampered. Privileged. You definitely get those vibes at Clarins.

Women wrapped in lush, white robes lounge on sunbeds underneath the large, glass, skylight. Their rosy cheeks are a testament to the better blood circulation from a refreshing swim or a Balinese massage.

No one speaks. Cell phones must be kept near the locker area. The only sound is the Tibetan mood music and the flow of water from the cascade pool. People read their books and sip on fresh fruit juices, compliments of the SPA-café.

The body treatments, such as the Youthfulness from Rajasthan, or the Firming from Guyana, are known throughout the industry. That is because Clarins is an international name and has built a reputation as a specialist in body contouring and firming treatments. “For every body issue, there is a Clarins solution,” promises Amin. She also suggests pairing any of the body treatments they offer, with the 90-minute Rising Sun Gentle Exfoliation. “Do the exfoliation prior to the body treatment for better results.”

The facilities boast a whirlpool, sauna, steam room, and of course, fitness center. The “Aquamedic” pool is only 4-feet deep, making it ideal for the Aqua-aerobic classes, which are given twice a week. Yoga is also offered. Doing downward dog and sun salutations has never been so serene, especially with that idyllic view! Spa manicures and pedicures are given in the salon section, which has lounge chairs that face floor-to-ceiling windows, giving you that outside feel in the comfort of a temperature-controlled atmosphere.

Even the showers and toilets are posh! A special drying machine for bikinis is there for your convenience. “You just drop your swimsuit in here, wait a few seconds, and then voila!” demonstrates Amin, “You can put it back in your Louis without fear it’ll ruin it!” Complimentary use of Clarins make-up is available in case you need to head to a meeting after a facial or a quick dip in the pool.

Non-members can visit the spa, but there is a hefty entrance fee. The membership packages are great and have gracious incentives, such as free over-night stays at the hotel, 10% off at its 5-star restaurants, and of course, credits for spa treatments and vouchers for friends!

I’ve often searched for one of those luxurious spas that are more a retreat than just a regular day at the salon. At Clarins, I found it. With the panoramic view of the coast and the calm, tranquil atmosphere, you’ll definitely feel like you’re on a special getaway.

I fell in love with the spa, which feels more like a luxurious retreat from your everyday schedule. But, alas, I had to leave my newly discovered haven of serenity and get back to work. And as I was in the elevator heading back down to reality, there they were: 6 missed calls, 4 text messages and 9 e-mails. I hate reality sometimes.
