Anti-abortion protests draw thousands in Spain

By DEUTSCHE PRESSE-AGENTUR

MADRID: Thousands of people gathered across Spain Sunday to protest plans to make access to abortion easier.

It was the third time anti-abortion protesters had gathered since Spain's parliament cleared the legislation, paving the way for the new law to take effect at the start of July.

Current law typically only allows abortion in cases of severe fetal deformities, rape or when the mother's health is at risk. The new guidelines would allow women access on demand to abortion services through the 14th week of a pregnancy.

Sunday's protests centerd in Madrid under the motto "Yes to Life." Protesters compared abortion to terrorism and urged Spain's Socialist government to reverse the policy.

The new law has come under heavy criticism from the Catholic church and the opposition conservative People's Party (PP). About 300 organizations sponsored the protests in a dozen cities Sunday.

About 100,000 abortions are performed annually in Spain.
