25 killed as bus hits bomb in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan: A packed bus hit a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday, killing 25 people aboard, as NATO announced another US death in a rapidly rising monthly death toll.

The passenger bus was traveling in Nimroz province on a main highway toward the capital, Kabul, when it struck the explosive around 7 a.m. local time, said Nazir Ahmad, a provincial government spokesman. Another 20 people were wounded, he said.

The explosion occurred around Delaram — a volatile area near the borders of Helmand and Farah provinces.

Meanwhile, NATO forces said a US service member was killed in an insurgent attack in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday, without giving further details.

July is already one of the deadliest months for US troops in the nearly nine-year Afghan war, with 59 service members killed so far. That's just shy of the 60 that died in June — currently the deadliest month for US forces.

US forces have pushed into southern Taleban strongholds in recent months and weeks in an attempt to squeeze insurgents out of the area where they have long functioned as a de-facto government. Along with the surge, attacks on military forces and Afghan supporters of the government have increased. Many civilians have also been killed or injured in incidents like Wednesday's bus bomb or caught up in the crossfire.

The NATO military coalition is also receiving heavy casualties overall. Altogether, 80 NATO troops have died so far in July. In June, 103 NATO forces were killed.

The rising death toll comes as US forces continue the search for a missing Navy sailor who was captured last week by Taleban forces when he and a colleague drove into an insurgent-held area of eastern Afghanistan. One of the sailors was killed in a firefight with militants and the Taleban has said they captured the other.

The sailors were instructors at a counterinsurgency school for Afghan security forces, according to senior military officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case. The school was headquartered in Kabul and had classrooms outside the capital, but they were never assigned anywhere near where the body of the sailor was recovered, the officials said.

NATO officials were unable to say what the two service members were doing in such a dangerous part of eastern Afghanistan.

The Navy has identified the missing sailor as Petty Officer 3rd Class Jarod Newlove, a 25-year-old from the Seattle area. The Pentagon lists Newlove as "whereabouts unknown," and did not confirm that he was captured.

The soldier who was killed in the firefight was Petty Officer 2nd Class Justin McNeley — a 30-year-old father of two from Wheatridge, Colorado. NATO recovered his body on Sunday.

In central Uruzgan province, meanwhile, three Afghan soldiers were killed when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb Wednesday, said Gulab Khan, deputy provincial police chief.

NATO troops are behind it because they want to pure themselves.Last week they fired a rocket which killed fifty two innocent civilians in Afghanistan and now they planted a bomb.Inorder to make sure that people should not join Taliban in Afghanistan. It's a dangerous game.

Hi Ubaid, I think you have intelligence, but your post does not suggest that. Use your intelligence before you lose it at death.
Do you mean that someone in NATO placed the bomb and then shouted: Allahu Akbar, God is Great, as 1 U.S. soldier and 25 Muslims were killed and another 20 Muslims were wounded? It makes no sense at all.
It is blasphemy to call out Allah's name while doing terrible acts of murder and cruelty. May be it would be fitting to call out Satan's name when one blows himself and bystanders to bits with a bomb belt. God called Satan a murderer and thief from the beginning and those who do such things are heading for judgement, just as Satan is. GOD does exist. so watch out!

ALWAI FRANCIS,Ya surely someone in NATO placed the bomb and then shouted: we are the son's of devil America and Israel. In Afghanistan someone saw NATO soldier planting a bomb on the orders of David petraeus and it was confirmed later. That is why Albert Karzai is so angry. Not because civilians were killed but because of secret leaks in Afghanistan.Befor NATO forces in Helmand there were no reports of civilian casualties, what is the reason behind it?

Hi Ubaid, your reply to my post, brings a smile to my face (though it is not funny). Do you mean that all the people in America and Israel are all sons of devils? You know that devils do not reproduce, ie they are sexless just like the angels. That is why there cannot be baby angels in heaven, or baby devils in hell. Babies only happen on this earth.
What we expect is that the Taliban ought to act like human beings. ...But that asking too much of them, because the Taliban and Bin Laden and his friends do not do immitations of humanity. They even place bombs in your mosques.

ALAWI FRANCIS,devil got married and in his marriage cermony George bush,Dick cheney,Rice,Ariel sharon and many Jews as well as Christians were present. Are NATO terrorists really concerned of humanity?I think they have learned lot of lessons on humanity in White house and Pentagon. World hates NATO troops and even Americans hate them because of their atrocious policies. TALIBAN do not place bombs in our mosques but agents of CIA are behind it.Recently a CIA agent was arrested in Russia,he was planting a bomb in a Mosque and he has links with terrorist organization of Ireland.
