Top police officials transferred in Maharashtra

By SHAHID RAZA BURNEY | ARAB NEWS

MUMBAI: In a late night decision on Wednesday, the Maharashtra state government reshuffled 40 senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers.

Controversial Pune Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh was shunted out and transferred as additional director general of police (Establishment). He was replaced by Meera Borwankar, special inspector general of police in Criminal Investigation Department, Pune. Borwankar was promoted to additional director general and becomes the first woman officer to hold the post of police commissioner.

Satyapal Singh had been at loggerheads with the Minister of State for Home Ramesh Bagwe, who hails from Pune. The minister had announced the transfer of the police commissioner in the Maharashtra Assembly in April, but the decision was put on hold by his senior colleague R.R. Patil, who was of the opinion that Singh should be transferred at the time of the reshuffle in July.

Another important transfer was of Javed Ahmed, the additional director general of police (Establishment) in the director general of police office. He was transferred to Navi Mumbai, where the post of the police commissioner had been upgraded from that of the special inspector general of police to that of additional director general of police.

Nagpur's new police commissioner would be Ankush Dhanvijay, while the outgoing Police Commissioner Praveen Dixit has been transferred as principal secretary (special) in the government secretariat. He replaces D.K. Jain who will take over as the head of the newly-formed State Security Corporation (SSC).

The special commando "Force One" chief Sadanand Date has been promoted from additional commissioner to special inspector general of police and posted in State Intelligence Department (SID) where he replaced K.L. Prasad who too has been promoted from rank of joint commissioner of police (Crime) Mumbai to the rank of additional director general of police and posted in state police headquarters.

Mumbai Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sanjay Barve has been transferred as director Maharashtra Police Academy in Nashik. He has been replaced by Vivek Phansalkar, the additional commissioner of police, Thane.
