Continuing his winning ways where he’s dominated at every event, Thierry Mathy spectacularly broke the James Cusden course record and in the process put 2 minutes into his nearest rivals to clinch the Riyadh Wheelers 10-mile Time Trial.
A lower than expected turnout could have been due to the changeable weather, but this did not detract from a high quality field signing on, with riders coming from all over the Kingdom for this short test against the watch.
One of those was Chad Albury, who climbed onto the second step on the podium by taking the scalps of some of the best cyclists in the Kingdom and admitted part of his success could be put down to taking delivery of a new machine.
Talented all-rounder and student, Sultan Asiri, has been on the podium in every event he’s ridden and once again produced a great ride, without the advantage of a specialist machine, although one is available for him to use when he participates with the national squad.
With familiar names filling the next places, a name which stands out is Stu Gillespie, who in the course of a few weeks has gone from relative novice to nearly breaking into the top 10. Said Gillespie, “I’ve just bought a new TT bike and can’t believe what a difference it makes, pity I can’t use it in road races.” His success has apparently prompted a rush from the membership to purchase these bikes which unfortunately are only available outside of the Kingdom. A 50km road race is the next event on the calendar, with a large contingent coming from Eastern Province to test the Riyadh riders once again.
