The 3rd Commissioner Cup Invitational Basketball tournament starts tomorrow at the Zahid Tractor covered court in Nasseem on the outskirts of Riyadh. The opening day program starts 6 p.m.
Tournament Commissioner Tess P. Garcia confirmed the participation of 10 teams, 5 in the Open category and 5 in the 38 years and above.
In the Open Division are Al Babtain Company of Henry A. Zoleta bannered by Riyadh’s best big men in James Smith, Roel Asay and Sherwin Garcia; BMTC of Noel Domingo & Joemani Bambilla with Jaime Hernandez, Jerry Miranda and Eman Santos leading the team; Paparotti of Jabbar Patara and Louie Mulles; Senator of Robert “Lance” Quiambao and Rodel Tanega with Riyadh’s best guards Ankie Angeles & Jojo Custodio at the helm along with stalwart Tonton Somera and Ford Al-Jazeera.
The 38 & above category will feature RIS Warriors of Joel Calayo; Psalm; Zahid Tractor of Alex Paragoso; EOS Edition of Edwin Sarmiento with Boy Mariano, Ding Natanauan & Aref Aldaba playing and Lions of veteran cager Roel Langit.
According to Garcia, Jojo Custodio of the Senator team will lead the oath of sportsmanship during the opening ceremony. The first games are to be drawn by lot. The top four teams in each category advance to the semifinal after the round robin eliminations with the No. 1 semifinalist to meet No. 4 and second finalist against No. 3 in a pair of knockout games. The winners proceed in a best-of-three for the championship while the losers battle in a knockout game for third and fourth.
Garcia said regular games will be played every Thursday from 6 p.m.
Garcia is the league commissioner for three years now and is being supported by Tom Portuguez, Abel Dayrit, Alvin Sumayo and Jake Buban. The Filipino Confederation of Basketball Referees (FCBR) headed by Ernie Dela Cruz and Ed Tamayo will handle the tournament officiating.
