Organs harvested from brain-dead patients have been donated to kidney patients last week in the Kingdom and Kuwait, within the framework of the Organ Transplant Exchange Program between GCC countries.
The Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation (SCOT) succeeded in acquiring the approval of the family of a brain-dead patient at King Saud Medical City last week. Seven transplant operations took place in the Kingdom and Kuwait. The two kidneys were given to two Saudi female patients at King Faisal Specialized Hospital (KFSH) in Riyadh and Jeddah. The patient’s heart was transplanted to a Saudi male patient at KFSH, while the liver was donated to a Kuwaiti female patient.
A Kuwaiti brain-dead patient’s liver was donated to a Saudi male patient at King Fahd Medical City in Riyadh, and one of his kidneys was donated to a Saudi female patient in Kuwait, while the other went to a Kuwaiti male patient.
Director of the SCOT, Faisal Shaheen, noted that cooperation between the Kingdom and the GCC countries in the field of organ transplant is significant.
Shaheen stressed the importance of this program and the positivity it had generated for renal failure patients.
The Cabinet of Ministers had confirmed that 10 percent of organ donations must be directed toward the GCC countries.
The SCOT is considered a reference center due to the long experience and the achievements it had acquired in the field of organ transplantation.
