Heat Island Effect
Heat islands form in urban settings where vegetation is replaced by concrete structures such as roads and buildings, making surfaces absorb — instead of reflect — the sun's heat. With roads reaching high temperatures of 70 degrees Celsius, the heat absorbed is released at night, keeping people from taking a walk during summer nights. To address this, Saudi Arabia's Roads General Authority is testing a newly technology that uses cold pavements, which are meant to reduce road surface temperatures.
Pogrom
It is a word that describes an organized act of mass violence targeting a particular ethnic or religious group. The term had been used to refer to ethnic mob attacks against Jews in eastern Europe in the 19th and early 20th centuries. On March 1, 2023, Maj. Gen. Yehuda Fuchs, head of the Israeli army’s Central Command, described the Feb. 28, 2023, rampage by Jewish settlers in the Palestinian town of Hawara as a "pogrom carried out by outlaws."
