Arbitration conference planned

The first international arbitration conference to review the new arbitration system and the impact of Shariah as the system of legislation will be held in Makkah from Dec. 10 to Dec. 12.
Fahd Mushabib Al-Khafeer, chairman of the board of trustees of the Makkah International Center for Conciliation and Arbitration (MICCA) and vice chairman of the Arab Federation for International Arbitration, said: “The conference will review the role of the judiciary, chambers of commerce and industry and the arbitration centers in supporting the concept of arbitration.”
“The conference will endeavor to spread the culture of arbitration and conciliation as a means to settle differences at national, regional and international levels,” said Al-Khafer, adding arbitration is an important tool for settling commercial differences between individuals, companies and establishments.
He said the conference would clarify the new system of arbitration in the Kingdom, which has been designed to achieve justice and promote Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah’s plan to develop the judicial system.
“The conference will discuss the shortcomings in the old Saudi system and how the new system can overcome them. It will focus on Shariah principles that arbitrators have to build on to avoid cancellation of their ruling,” he said.
The conference will emphasize the role of local, regional and international arbitration centers in the provision of arbitration services. “We will try to qualify arbitrators, enhance their skills and make arbitration the best method for business leaders to resolve their differences,” Al-Khafer said.
The conference will be held under the sponsorship of King Abdullah at King Abdul Aziz Historic Hall on the university campus at the Al-Abidiyah district in Makkah.
