Saudi Arabia yesterday denounced the human rights violations being committed by the Bashar Assad regime against the Syrian people and described the regime’s atrocities as crimes against humanity.
Addressing the Human Rights Council in Geneva, the Kingdom’s Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to the United Nations Abdul Wahab Attar called for urgent steps to stop the deteriorating situation in Syria.
“Saudi Arabia has stated very clearly that what is happening in Syria cannot be accepted or justified and has strongly condemned acts of violence, murder and heinous crimes committed by the Syrian government and its militias,” said Attar.
He called for a halt to crimes against the Syrians and stressed the need to bring their perpetrators to justice. “We support all regional and international efforts to stop all forms of violence and to alleviate the suffering of the brotherly Syrian people,” he said.
Attar said the Kingdom contributed to decisions made by different regional and international bodies calling for a peaceful end to the crisis. He cited the launch of a national campaign to mobilize financial support for the Syrians, and the Kingdom’s contribution to the special fund for humanitarian relief of the Syrian people, which was created under the umbrella of the Arab League.
The ambassador called for a unified international stand to "save what can be saved" in Syria, stressing the importance of continuing the work of the international fact-finding committee to report the massive and grave violations by the Syrian authorities that are still being committed against their own people.
