RIYADH: Minister of Commerce and Industry Tawfiq Al-Rabiah will launch a body to monitor the prices of basic food commodities at the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) today.
The monitoring body constitutes a major step to boost food security in the Kingdom in line with the directives of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah to ensure the needs of the Kingdom for agricultural and food products at affordable prices.
The committee is entrusted to provide accurate data on strategic food items, an exchange of information on the availability and prices of food commodities and how to reinforce the national efforts for the realization of food security.
The committee is designed to help decision-makers, officials, researchers and other departments concerned to access information on the prices and availability of food items in local markets.
The launching of the committee comes in the context of RCCI’s care for boosting the role of the private sector in supporting government efforts for the realization of food security, provision of strategic agricultural and food commodities in local markets and how to avert the negative impact of fluctuations in world food production.
The RCCI has earlier set up an independent food security committee emanating from the Agricultural Committee. This committee contains experts in the area of food security and is intended to put King Abdullah’s initiative on Saudi agricultural investments abroad into practice and find new solutions to realize food security.
