A border guard officer was killed during a gunfight with drug traffickers in Jazan yesterday, said Col. Abdullah bin Mahfouz, spokesman of the department.
He identified the dead officer as Abdul Baqi bin Obaidan Mutaani.
“The officer died of bullet wounds on his head. He died soon after reaching hospital,” Mahfouz told reporters. The gunfight took place in Bani Malik in the Jazan region.
Police are looking for the smugglers who had run away after the gunfight.
Gen. Zamim Al-Sawat, director general of the department, called upon his officers to be cautious while dealing with smugglers.
He urged security officers to track down the culprits as quickly as possible.
Maj. Gen. Abdul Aziz Al-Subahi, commander of the border guards in the region, conveyed the command’s condolences to the officer’s bereaved family.
