NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana: Quarterback Drew Brees broke Johnny Unitas’ 52-year-old record en route to a four-touchdown performance as the New Orleans Saints defeated the San Diego Chargers 31-24 on Sunday.
Brees completed 29-of-45 passes for 370 yards as he engineered a 10-point comeback in the second half against the Chargers.
Brees has tossed a touchdown pass in 48 straight games, breaking quarterback Unitas’ mark of 47 that the hall of famer established between 1956 and 1960.
Brees said he had to give credit to his teammates for helping him achieve the record.
“We finally put together a great team effort for all four quarters. I can’t say enough for the guys in our locker room,” Brees said. “We have been through a lot together. Hopefully this will lead to more wins.”
On his Twitter page, league commissioner Roger Goodell lauded Brees: “Congrats to @drewbrees & his teammates on breaking Unitas’ record. Amazing accomplishment by great QB & leader. We’re proud of you, Drew.”
Receiver Marques Colston made nine catches for 131 yards and three touchdowns, while Devery Henderson had eight receptions for 123 yards and a score for the Saints, who earned their first win of the National Football League season.
San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers went 27-for-42 through the air for 354 yards with two touchdowns. Rivers also had an interception.
Ryan Mathews rushed the ball 12 times for 80 yards and a touchdown and added 59 yards on six catches in the loss.
