It is indeed very sad to learn that one out of every eight people in the world is chronically undernourished, according to a recent report of the United Nations’ food agencies. It’s an international shame.
The opening line really strikes an impact and makes us realize the gravity of the situation. In a report on food insecurity, the UN agencies said 868 million people were hungry in 2010-2012, or about 12.5 percent of the world’s population, down more sharply than previously estimated from about 1 billion, or 18.6 percent in 1990-92.
Children in most Asian countries are malnourished or undernourished. All citizens are the future and backbone of the country they live in. If they live in deprivation, how can they grow as responsible, dignified and productive citizens? For our part, we must do whatever we can to ensure that the poor in our neighborhood do not go to sleep without food which is in line with the teachings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). — Mir Gazanfar Ali Zaki, Jeddah
