Civil Defense evacuates cracked building

A Civil Defense team evacuated a residential building in Jeddah’s Marwa District after its facade cracked diagonally, a resident said.
Residents of the building were taken by surprise when they heard a loud cracking sound, resembling an explosion. Upon inspection of the building, they found the crack and called Civil Defense immediately, who ordered to evacuate the building at once.
“When we called the architect who supervised the construction works, he said the incident is not his responsibility. The whole neighborhood is built on a pool of groundwater, he told us,” said another resident of the building. He added that the architect had told them to sue Jeddah Mayor’s Office.
Some residents demanded that the architect would be held responsible, and be detained until the end of the investigations. Others asked the Municipality to quickly provide them with alternative dwellings, and continue investigations on the incident.
