Taking KSA to new heights
One year ago, after the demise of King Abdullah Saudi Arabia experienced yet another smooth transition of power, which is the beauty of the Saudi system. Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman became the seventh king of modern-day Saudi Arabia.
King Salman was a known global figure and already loved by Saudis. Even before becoming the king, he was one of the most active royal figures who loved to remain in constant touch with the masses. Since a very tender age, King Salman had been exposed to the world of global and regional politics. He is known for his political acumen, public dealing and effective governance skills.
On Feb. 4, 1963 then Prince Salman was assigned the task to manage the affairs of the capital city as its governor. He took the office at a time when the Arab world was passing through a rough phase. Many changes were taking place at the regional and global levels. Saudi Arabia, being the most important Muslim country, had to naturally take necessary measures to lead the Arab and the Muslim world to safety amid all that political turmoil.
It was the time when the Cold War was at its peak and the regional situation was too fluid to handle. Saudi Arabia, however, was able to lead the Arab world and manage its affairs skillfully. The young Saudi prince not only learned about the complicated maze of international politics, he also helped the region navigate through unchartered waters.
During his long tenure as the Riyadh governor, Prince Salman always remained in touch with the Saudis and other residents of the city. He knew their needs firsthand.
As the Riyadh governor, he remained involved with every key government responsibility as a senior member of the royal family. He headed a lot of welfare organizations in the Kingdom and worked as a very important link between the ruler and the ruled in Saudi Arabia. During his tenure as the governor, he was known for his ability to remember names and faces of people who only met him once. King Salman is also known for being the most knowledgeable historians in the Arab world.
In later years, he became the defense minister, the crown prince and later on became custodian of the two holy mosques in January 2015. In short, King Salman is a born leader, decision maker, historian and an administrator who never kept an issue in his office more than 24 hours without a decision or an answer.
Now, it has been a year since King Salman’s accession to the throne. He is effectively leading the country toward new heights of development and modernization.
King Salman became the ruler of Saudi Arabia at a time when the entire world, particularly the region, was facing various challenges. The difficult times that the world is going through have not hampered the efforts of King Salman to continue political, social and economic reforms.
During the last year, the king appointed various young technocrats at key government positions. Saudi Arabia saw the election of women for municipal posts. The world saw the Kingdom at the fore-front in helping the world to achieve lasting peace in the world and to take serious steps to eradicate terrorism, which is threatening the whole world. But, most important is the Kingdom’s serious plans for a better future for the future generations of Saudis.
And finally, many of the Saudis still remember the most touching words that were said by King Salman when asked about, who built the country in the old days. His answer was, every Saudi family and tribe contributed to the establishment of modern Saudi Arabia.
