JEDDAH: The Saudi Traffic Department has denied that it is introducing new license plates for cars.
It said hackers posted pictures of the supposedly new license plates on its Twitter account on Sunday.
The department said the news, which went viral, was not true.
In a statement posted on several social media sites on Monday, it said the pictures were photoshopped.
The bogus pictures showed the license plates in English and Arabic, with supposedly additional city codes. The fake codes include Riyadh (R), Al-Sharqiya (E), Makkah (Mk), Madinah (MD), Hail (H), Northern Border (N), Najran (Nj), Jizan (J), Qassim (Q), Al-Baha (B), Asir (As), Tabuk (T) and Arar (AR).
Earlier this year, the traffic department did release a statement saying that Arabic-only license plates would no longer be allowed on cars.
