Hey Sugar is one of the hippest cupcake and cake shops in the Middle East. You just have to love their cupcake names, their presentation and their exceptional taste. The bakeshop offers more than 45 flavors, which guarantees there is something for everyone. They offer a wide array of baked goods and American style desserts, cakes, cheesecakes, pies, brownies, cookies. Recently they added cake pops — that look like lollipops on a stick — which are taking the country by storm.
The business started when Raed Saqfelhait's, managing partner, wife was diagnosed with cancer and had to fight it and survived. Her husband was constantly looking for something that will keep her busy and that's when they both agreed on opening a bakery boutique and Hey Sugar was born.
To start with the bakeshop’s specialty and everyone’s favorite: Their cupcakes come in a huge variety of beautiful pieces of heaven. The Never Kiss N’tella is one of the best sellers made of chocolate cupcake and Nutella Frosting. No See No Tella is another choice made for Nutella lovers, with banana cupcake and Nutella Frosting. The traditional Red Velvet is a favorite and the Gimme S’more is highly recommended. This chocolate cupcake is covered with a Graham cracker crust and topped with rich chocolate frosting and marshmallow. Sounds yummy, eh?
My personal favorite is the Tutti Not Frutti that was inspired by the Indian Diwali fireworks festival. It is a rainbow-colored cupcake with vanilla frosting and sprinkles on top. It is made with no eggs, keeping in mind the vegetarian traditions among some of the Indian Hindus. Another favorite is the Gold Digger, a vanilla cupcake with peanut butter and jelly frosting. A perfect night snack is the After Eight made with a chocolate cupcake and mint frosting.
A taste of Arabia is a category in the menu for flavors that are inspired by the Arabic cuisine and ingredients. The 1000&1 Swirls is my favorite by far: A vanilla cupcake topped with orange blossom frosting, pistachios and crowned with crispy konafeh (uncooked, shredded filo dough). The Desert Rose coffee cardamom cupcake also deserves a mention with its rose water frosting. As does the Blind Date cupcake, made with date cupcake and topped with cinnamon frosting.
Whoopie pies are two round cookie-like cakes made into a sandwich and filled with soft marshmallow fluff. Choose your flavor from red velvet, chocolate, pistachio or seasonal.
Cake Pops is the latest desert trend: a cute little cake on a stick, dipped into melted Belgian chocolate. Hey Sugar offers five different flavors from chocolate, red velvet, vanilla to peanut butter and seasonal.
The American pies section is another favorite of mine at Hey Sugar. They come in two sizes: big and personal, for those who do not want to share. The lemon meringue tart is traditional and tasty; the chocolate peanut butter tart tastes light and delightful like your childhood school lunch. The Banoffee pie is by far the best pie I ever tasted. It is made with honey crust, caramel, banana and fresh homemade cream. This pie will make you forget the reason why you’re on a diet.
The bakeshop offers are many other categories, like the signature squares of brownies, walnut turtle bar, jam square and sticky date bar. The Chunky Cookies with beautiful flavors from gingersnap, chocolate chip, chocolate peanut butter and my favorite, the oatmeal scotchie cookie. There are also classic cakes with flavors such as sticky toffee pudding, classic red velvet, pineapple carrot, very berry strawberry and finally — my guilty pleasure — the chocolate fudge cake.
Life gets cooler on the weekends with Hey Sugar’s frozen yogurt delights. Design your own frozen yogurt cup with any base from cake, cupcake, brownies or cookies and add vanilla or chocolate frozen yogurt and some delicious toppings. You can also choose from the seven suggested items on their menu and I highly recommend Go Bananas made with chocolate frozen yogurt topped on banana cake and slices of fresh banana drizzled with caramel sauce and chocolate sauce and sprinkled with walnuts and chocolate sprinkles. Doesn’t this sound tempting?
Hey Sugar offers entertainment for your whole family with their Mix Batter and Bake in their kids’ bakery studio. Take your whole family and enjoy a day learning how to bake with one of Hey Sugar’s staff in their kitchen and teach your children how to design cakes, cookies and cupcake and then enjoy eating them together.
Make a special order for your special day and customize your cake the way you love it, knowing that Hey Sugar only uses traditional homemade cream frosting to guarantee good taste and quality. Hey Sugar does in-house private parties and outside catering. Try their birthday treats from mini cupcakes, hamburger cupcakes and fries treats, mini rice crispy treats, mini Rocky Road squares, mini s’mores, cake pops, cake cones and more.
