Finally, the weather delayed Green Planet Bike Shop 69km cycling road race was held at the weekend in perfect weather, which attracted strong teams from Eastern Province and Al Hasa, thanks to a generous prize list.
With some of the Wheelers best athletes out of the Kingdom, the Riyadh riders knew they were in for a hard time, and so it proved when barely out of the neutral zone Jeremy Mirasol put in a strong attack.
Initially, little interest to chase came from large pack, but the riders from Udhailiyah hadn’t made the long trip twice in 2 weeks for nothing, so a blistering attack from Chad Albury and Todd Green soon bridged the gap to Mirasol, along with Pascal Cudey and Alex Carinan for company.
The hard working bunch, driven along by Steve Jenkins, George Morete, Edwin Seneres, Andy McLaughlan and Pete Foster brought the break back to about 50 meters but they couldn’t make the final contact.
Realizing that this would be his only chance, Rob Patrick jumped across the gap just before the leaders took flight once again.
This is how it stayed, the break of 6 working smoothly and keeping the now two large chase packs at bay.
Into the final kilometer, Carinan and Mirasol tried to spoil the Al Hasa party, but Green and Albury proved too strong for them with Green taking the honors in a close sprint from Mirasol and Cudey.
Jenkins won the bunch sprint for 7th with Stu Gillespie winning his sprint for 26th after admitting doing too much work earlier in the race. Thanks go to Carrefour LeMall and Green Planetís Erwin Rili, for the wonderful support they provided.
