JEDDAH: Mala Mohiyudheen, general secretary of the Federation of Kerala Associations in Saudi Arabia (FOKASA), was stabbed in his belly at Marghab Street in Riyadh on Thursday.
“I was attacked by five black youngsters, wearing trousers and T-shirts while I walked to my car on the side of the road. One of them pulled a dagger from his trousers and tried to stab me. I quickly defended myself, using the briefcase I was carrying. The dagger couldn’t make a deep stab in my stomach,” said Mohiyudheen.
He further said the other miscreants tried extort money from him. Mohiyudheen screamed loudly for help while the men were attacking him.
“It was strange that no one, neither the shop owners nor other passers-by, came to my aid. When the attackers left, nearby shop owners helped me to call the police,” he said.
The shop owners said that the same gang of thugs was responsible for many roadside extortions in that area. They were afraid to give a statement to the police, as the criminals might come back later, attack their shops, and damage their property.
Police vehicles arrived on the scene within 10 minutes after Mohiyudheen called them. Two other victims of the same robbers complained to the police about being attacked. The miscreants extorted SR 13,500 from one man, while the other person lost SR 500 and his Iqama.
After taking his statement, the plain clothed policemen in ordinary vehicles took Mohiyudheen to search for the gang. They found all five robbers, but could capture only two of them. The others ran away when they saw the police.
The arrested criminals were taken to Batha Police station.
