The International Conference of Border Security (ICBS) has adopted a national Saudi strategy in cooperation with states and organizations aimed at enhancing border security and achieving world peace and security.
The conference, held in Riyadh during June 2-7, 2012, within the functions of Saudi Border Guards’ 100th anniversary, also adopted a series of recommendations including sustainable development and rehabilitation of the territorial areas to encourage and attract people to settle there to enhance security of borders.
The conferees also called on the concerned bodies to develop and support border guard (BG) units with the latest technologies to achieve their mission in securing the Saudi waters, combating piracy and pollution violations.
They recommended that topics related to border security be included in educational courses emphasizing the policy of late King Abdulaziz concerning disputed territorial areas by creating neutral zones.
They called for the enhancement and upgrading capabilities and effectiveness of border guards through a variety of mechanisms including provision of training centers, the latest educational technologies and setting up a center for border researches and studies.
In this context, they called for introduction of means to combat piracy, smuggling, stowaways and slavery.
The conferees also called for the organization of an international conference on border security every two years in cooperation with regional and international organizations. They emphasized on the development of national legalization that will deal with crimes relating to border matters, increasing penalty for piracy, drug smuggling, and illegal immigration.
They called for encouraging Saudi women to join the work force as border guards after training and qualification, in conformity with Islamic law and Saudi traditions.
They urged Saudi Arabia to cooperate with the International Maritime Organization in the implementation of the Djibouti Code of Conduct (DCoC) and provide relevant training in legal and maritime affairs, cooperate with the coast guard in Somalia and exchange information with other DCoC countries and relevant centers.
They, further, emphasized the direct and indirect public awareness programs thru different means of media on the vital role of the BG in KSA.
They called for creation of a national society to be in charge of caring the families of martyrs in coordination with the concerned authorities in the Kingdom.
