RIYADH: Marlon Adriano and Johnson Sangcap were named Most Valuable Players (MVPs) as their team KFH Rangers clinched the championship crown in the Siglakas International Riyadh South District Unity Cup Basketball Tournament 2012 at the Dunes Compound Filipino Community basketball court in Olaya Thalateen area here.
The Rangers brought down Aziziah Magic 93-83 to complete a sweep of the best-of-three championship series. They took Game 1 by 78-68.
The winning team coached by Ruben Sangcap and anchored by his son Johnson along with Marlon Adriano, Joseph Repollo, Hector Laurequez and Jolito Rosales aimed high from the beginning of this league losing only once in the elimination round of this tournament that started with 15 teams.
The Magic, on the other hand, dressed only six cagers for the big game and yet managed to lead in each of the first two quarters at 20-18 and 45-31 thanks mainly to the trio of Raymond Gile, Edison Bien and Engelbert Josue.
During the third period, the Rangers started to hit their stride and gradually narrowed the Magic lead to 6 points 60-54 at the end of the quarter.
With less than five minutes to play, the Magic’s defense collapsed with the exit of Bien who committed his final foul and the Rangers marched to their biggest victory with 39-23 final quarter blast. Magic coach Willy Abdon missed the services of ace cagers Arnel Cunanan and Angel Bautista.
Individual and team awards were handed over to the winners by chief guests Rene Layug, Bong Delos Reyes, Elmer Pakinggan, Raul Villalobos and Henry Dumalaon in a simple program emceed by Chris Cabigting and Shara Jane Suguitan.
The awardees were: best sportsmanship teams – Artec and Senayah; best sportsmanship player – Arnel Camit (Senayah); highest in scores – Christopher Mangibin (Shemesy); best team coach – Ruben Sangcap (KFH) and best team manager – Errol Esguerra (Shemesy). This season’s first mythical five were Marlon Adriano (KFH – Guard), Johnson Sangcap (KFH – Guard), Edison Bien (Aziziah – Forward), Christopher Mangibin (Shemesy – Forward) and Reniel Ebora (Shemesy – Center). The second mythical five were Jayson Canarez (Industrial – Guard), Jeffrey Perez (Industrial – Guard), Joseph Repollo (KFH – Forward), Raymond Gile (Aziziah – Forward) and Hector Laurequez (Center – KFH). Adriano and Sangcap, both from the winning team were declared MVP of the Tournament and MVP of the Finals respectively. With the KFH Rangers in the entourage were Aziziah Magic – first runner-up, Shemesy – second runner-up and Industrial Archer – third runner-up.
Plaque and certificate of appreciation were handed over to Ben Samson Duhaylungsod (Dunes Sports Commissioner), Rex Badida (Dunes Sports Manager), Christopher Cabigting (Bukabin Sports Coordinator), Romeo Manahan and Leo Zamora (Bukabin Sports Committee officials) for their untiring support to the league.
The tournament enjoyed the generous support of Bukabin-Siglakas International Riyadh South and Central District league advisers Armando C. Ortiz, Sr., Felix A. Flor, Jr., Magtanggol C. Henry Dumalaon is the league commissioner of the Siglakas International Riyadh South District tournament committee. Dumalaon was supported by the 3-Kapisanan working committee Chris Cabigting, Romeo Manahan, Leo Zamora, Joan Malayo, Aiza Guerrero, Hazel Redolme and Shara Jane Suguitan. The Siglakas Referees Group officiated the tournament games.
