The recently-built “lost Jeddah treasure ship,” the largest made of styrofoam, is to enter the Guinness Book of World Records during this year’s Jeddah summer festival. It is currently housed at Red Sea Mall.
Mohammed Abdul Raheem Al-Safah, director of the festival, said the ship itself cost around SR1.5 million to build and that the organizing committee was working hard to get it recognized by Guinness World Records.
Saudi artists are also staging a play to entertain the public in front of the giant ship.
Mohammed Alawi, CEO of Red Sea Mall, said the reason for entering the ship into the Guinness Book of World Records during the festival was to encourage more visitors to come to Jeddah and also to support the city’s tourism industry.
Alawi told Arab News the center’s management team has already started to take action to register the ship.
The ship, almost 18-meter-long and four-meter-wide, was officially opened to the public a few days ago at the mall.
He thanked Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal and Jeddah Gov. Prince Mishaal bin Majed, who is also chairman of the local tourist development council, for their support. He said thanks to the governors’ support, domestic tourism is increasing each year.
Red Sea Mall has also hosted more than 12 active recreational and sporting events since the start of Jeddah Festival, including children's face painting, a painting contest, drawing beads, graffiti drawing, cartoon character designing, and photography competitions.
Other events include acrobatics, acting competitions, sport skills contests, and remote controlled car racing. The festival runs until the end of summer.
