I read with interest the article “Tug of war over Syria” (Oct. 27) by Linda Heard. I fully agree with the views expressed by the writer. Global powers appear to be more interested in gaining a foothold in Syria. Had they been genuinely concerned about the Syrian people and regional peace, they would not have turned a blind eye to Iranian role in Syria and other countries of the region. The world’s inaction led to the rise of the terrorist organization, Daesh, in Syria. We cannot ignore the fact that it was mainly due to Iranian backing that Assad survived for so long. Despite that the US is ready to embrace Iran much to the chagrin of its sincere regional allies and Russia is also not willing to displease Iran by withdrawing its support to Assad. It really is a confusing situation. — Nabeel Ahmed, Jeddah
