Libyan ambassador to Saudi Arabia Muhammad Abdullah Al-Shakal said the election commission in Libya is working on a mechanism to enable Libyans abroad to vote in the July elections for the National General Conference, the country’s legislative authority.
He said first the country would be selected where the Libyan missionary would host the elections for Libyans abroad. Probably that would be in the United Arab Emirates or Jordan, he added. The elections will be the first after Muammar Qaddafi was ousted last November. They will be held in the midst of unrest between armed groups in Libya.
Al-Shakal said, “We cannot hold elections at Libyan embassy in Saudi Arabia as the number of Libyan nationals in that country is very low. Most of them are students or university teachers at the Islamic University in Madinah. However, we are
still working on how to make sure they can vote in the elections.”
