Talented Saudi students in Jeddah displayed their innovative scientific projects at Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) recently winning the appreciation of education officials as well as their mentors and parents.
Addressing the ceremony that was held at JCCI to honor 84 bright students, Abdullah Al-Thaqafi, director general of education in Jeddah, disclosed plans to establish a school for talented girls after the success of Faisaliya School for talented boys.
“We have also a plan to establish a secondary school for talented boys,” the director said.
During the event, 22 students from Failsaliya School were also honored. Al-Thaqafi distributed prizes to the students who won top places in national, regional and international competitions. The students' mentors were also given awards.
Dr. Dheya Al-Othmany, director of Gifted Students Center at King Abdulaziz University, commended the students for their good work. He said the students presented their projects after attending special training courses in electronics, nuclear engineering, radiochemistry, bioengineering, etc. “Our aim is to prepare outstanding scientists by developing the capabilities of talented students,” he said.
Speaking about interesting projects presented by the students, Al-Othmany said, “One of them presented a study on the effect of plastic bottles on water while another on the impact of electronic games on children's behavior.” He disclosed plans to manufacture some of the devices developed by students.
“The programs and exhibitions like this will be instrumental in tapping the innate potentials of the creative and gifted students who otherwise would fall into laziness due to the pitfalls in the traditional curriculum,” said Dr. Ismail Maritheri, an English language professor of King Abdulaziz University.
“Every teacher should identify students with superior thinking abilities and dynamic skills related to his/ her subject from each class and should give them special assignments to make their abilities bloom to the full,” he said.
