JEDDAH: In precisely 58 days, the first stage of developing Jeddah’s northern corniche project will be completed, according to the countdown clock the municipality has installed near the location.
The project that was launched at the beginning of this year and expected to change completely the look of the corniche is 85 percent complete.
Muhaisen Al-Bluwi, director of Parks and Afforestation at Jeddah Mayor’s Office, said the first stage (which includes the new corniche) of the seafront development project will have new elements that will serve visitors to Jeddah as per the highest possible standards.
The project covers an area of more than 58,000 square meters, stretching for 700 meters from Al-Tahlia corniche intersection to Al-Mukhtar Street.
The second stage will cover more than 65,000 square meters and extend for 900 meters from Al-Mukhtar Street to Sari Street. The third stage will include the development of an area of more than 204,000 square meters that extends from Sari Street to Annawras Square roundabout.
The project divided the developed area into three parts starting from the Border Guard center in the south (of the corniche) to Abdullah Abduljabbar Street to the north; and from the latter to Sari Street (second part); and from Sari to Annawras Square (third part).
The last stage of the project will see the development of the area stretching from the square to Fatima Azzahra’a Mosque to the north. When finished, the project in general will have 13 commercial locations including restaurants and kiosks, in addition to public toilets with an independent contract for their maintenance and cleanliness. The area for parking is to be expanded to 850 lots.
The project designated 7 areas as playgrounds for children. The Annawras Lake will be decorated with 23 fountains with lights. Four other fountains will be installed in different corniche locations.
It will also have four locations jutting into the sea for fishermen and visitors.
The Jeddah Mayor’s Office said the sculptures along the development area were all moved and will be placed back after they were maintained and their bases and lights replaced.
