Deputy Education Minister Khaled Al-Sabti yesterday allayed fears about the spread of drugs and narcotics in public schools, saying it is not widespread and cannot be considered a major problem.
“The Education Ministry has taken all possible measures to control the spread of drugs among students in public schools,” Al-Sabti said.
He disclosed plans to launch an intensive awareness program targeting public school students beginning from the next academic year.
“This campaign plan is currently under preparation and it will continue for four years,” the minister said.
Speaking to reporters after meeting with Maj. Gen. Othman Al-Muhrej, director general of the Drug Combating Department, he said the new campaign would be carried out making use of modern technology.
Abdul Elah Al-Sharief, assistant director general of the Drug Combating Department for preventive affairs, said the national preventive program would cover 5 million students across the Kingdom.
