Media claims that most Saudis arrested in Iraq are involved in terrorism-related cases are baseless, said Thamer Al-Blaihed, head of the committee on Saudi prisoners in Iraq.
“According to Iraqi Justice Ministry data, 80 percent of Saudi inmates are convicted in criminal charges. I think that if more investigation is carried out, we would find that those involved in terrorism-related issues do not exceed 4 percent of Saudi inmates.”
He also said that eight Saudis are jailed in Iraq without trial and that the recent list of Saudi inmates issued by Baghdad is not authentic.
“It included the names of five Saudis who were released and are now in Riyadh. It also didn’t include the names of other Saudi inmates who are currently in Iraqi prisons.”
He said Al-Jurais Lawyers and Legal Consultancy Group with which the committee is affiliated has been invited by the Iraq Embassy in Riyadh to form a team of Saudi and Iraqi lawyers to defend Saudis in Iraq. “However, we are waiting for the extradition agreement signed between the two countries to be implemented.”
He said the group would begin working on the dossiers of Saudi prisoners in Guantanamo and other prisons around the world when the issue of Saudis in Iraqi prisons is resolved.
