Makkah move limits old cars

Makkah’s traffic department has banned expats from having more than two worn-out cars as part of its efforts to reduce the number of such vehicles in the city to protect its environment.
“We’ll not allow expats to have more than two very old cars,” Col. Sultan Al-Jumaie, director of traffic in Makkah, told Arab News.
The move comes after the department’s observation that expats in Makkah possess the largest number of old vehicles. “We want to get rid of such exhausted vehicles as soon as possible.”
A committee has been set up to find out such cars and motorbikes, Al-Jumaie said, adding that owners of these vehicles would be asked to get their vehicles passed by motor vehicle periodic inspection.
He said efforts were underway to implement the second phase of Saher project in Makkah. “We are now in the process of installing Saher cameras at traffic points,” he said.
